Chance a convicted criminal with finaid questions!

Haha, just kidding… The title’s only to draw Oprah!'s attention :stuck_out_tongue: (Unless you convict me of posting a chances thread) Minor offense? :)

So I’m considering Stanford, and I’ve done the figures and after four years I’ll probably end up with a loan of roughly 60000 USD. **Is this much?/b. What are you guys loaning?

So let’s say I’m not applying for finaid.

---------------------------------------------------------------boring stats follow:

I graduated from a ridiculous small high school in the middle of nowhere, in the middle of nowhere in Europe (= Norway), with a bunch of A’s and four-five B’s (two C’s, will that finish me off?) So my UW would be around 3.8.

**Toughest course load in school history/b, self-studied advanced physics and chemistry and got B and A on the exams, respectively (missed the easy part on the physics :S).

Rank: N/A (but 1/24 unofficially :P))

My SAT’s a disaster. 1390/1600 with a 710CR 680M 650W10E = 2040
Subject Tests: **710 USH/b, **680 M Level 2/b, 770 Physics

My teachers are estatic about me (best student in 15 years, etc), and my guid.con. loves me too. Yay :)

A few leadership EC’s
Class president 9th, 12th (“Russ” for those who know what that is)
A lot of smaller “leadership positions” like editor-in-chief of a few web pages. I have designed a bunch of them and consider myself “comfortable” with Photoshop as well. Somewhat athletic, I exercise 10hrs/week :P

Work experience - cashier, 15hrs/week - aaand, teaching seniors how to surf the net like pro’s. :D

I have a huge passion for engineering, spaceflight and airplanes and this really comes across in both activities, summer camps, essays and in teacher recs.

My essays are really strong - at least those few who have read them think so. Kinda very personal with a touch of passion and creativity. Looked like a mess in the beginning but they are coming along nicely.

Weaknesses: Uh, low SAT’s, from a small school that has never sent anyone to an intl university, I can go on and on and on…
Strengths: hmmm… anything? Well, passion… I suppose :stuck_out_tongue:

I am currently serving one year doing mandatory military service in the Norwegian Air Force as a CCA for the F-16. Kinda a gap year I didn’t want but hey, you gotta do what you gotta do - at least I get to work with fighter planes :)

-.-

I apologize for a very messy thread - but do you think I have a shot?
(Applying to some other schools, like USC and Purdue (scholarship covering full tution, very tempting), but Stanford’s really the “elite” school I wanna attend).

Rejected (thanks to the title!)

wait
are you or are you not a crimy?

No, I’m not a “crimy”, it was only an attention-getter :stuck_out_tongue: (No, I don’t start my essays that way)

The only crime I have committed is to post a “chance me thread”, or else I wouldn’t be in the military  (I wouldn’t qualify for a visa either)

well i guess you certainly have a chance, just not a very strong one

i would say rejected, especially since your international too.

ouch, but really? I thought many parents aren’t sending kids to colleges this year. Wouldn’t that improve all applicants’ chances (especially the internationals who are willing to hand money over to Stanford?) Or would that not affect top-notch schools like Stanford? I think Stanford does want diversity and I am also willing to bet that not that many people applied from Northern Europe…

I would say that you have a fair chance. Not impossible, but I wouldn’t be surprised if u were rejected. On the otherhand, if u were an asian like myself with the stats u currently have, I am sorry, u have no chance. (Uh, does it sound mean > <? But yeah, we all need reality checks sometime… =/)

I appreciate you guys being harsh and telling the truth as you see it. I know that Stanford is a high reach for me, and I’m already geared for USC or Purdue, so an acceptance from Stanford would only be a huge bonus  There is always grad school.

I’ll just do my best writing the application and see what happens. If I’m rejected, at least I know why :stuck_out_tongue: All I can hope for is that they somehow see me as a NSTK (Neat Small Town Kid) lol.

I’m not an Asian (I consider myself just a regular Norwegian, white, with a family that has lived in Norway for the past 1000 years probably, and nobody really gets why I wanna leave 'em.) So at least I don’t have to compete with you 2400 monsters >.>

“I’m not asian… So at least I don’t have to compete with you… monsters”
racist?

no, because you took out the 2400 part of his post. I completely agree that 2400 scoring asians are monsters in the application pool.

to be honest, if kong wen decides its alright to make this guy feel bad by saying that asians have it worse, he should take the response he gets.

i could say i had it worse than an asian with money, because i have to apply for aid. someone else could say they have it worse than me, because their dad died before their exams.

my point is, lets not turn this into race - and if you do, take whatever you dish out

it was completely a joke

omg, dude, no matter what race you are, it’s hard to get into Stanford okay? and yes, thank you gimmestanford, it was completely a joke.

i think you have a chance, as you’re a TOTALLY *** BBQ candidate… diversity!
well, I HOPE you have a chance… I’m Norwegian aswell, and I applied to two “prestigious” universities - Cornell and UPenn (chemeng) (as a sophomore transfer)… Got into UPenn, with sort of similar stats, but higher (2150) SAT and math/chem 750+ SAT II’s and a 4.4ish university GPA… did the IB though… with mediocre EC achievements though (I would guess low 25%).

I’m sure I would have gotten bumped from UPenn if I was not Norwegian - looking at some of the transfer profiles that got denied… So it will matter.

I’ll say 20-25% chance, and I know your non-fin aid situation (l
