Competitive school near seattle, sends one or two students to top schools every year or two

SAT I: 2040 (620 CR, 770 M, 650 W (8 Essay))–didn’t take it seriously, dozed off during the test, it was bad. retaking in october

SAT II: Just took them in June, expecting 800 on math 2, mid 700’s lit, mid-high 700’s in us history

I’m not sure of class rank, but students who don’t take accelerated courses rank on the same scale, so I assumed probably top 5% out of 400. 4.0 unweighted all throughout highschool, 5.0 weighted (honors/ap’s given 5 for an A, and mandatory courses without honors/ap levels aren’t taken into account on this scale)

Hardest Curriculum Offered By School
Sophomore:
sophomore french Honors
english pre-AP (equiv. to honors)
chem pre-AP
physics pre-AP
junior math honors
sophomore gym (mandatory)
career planning (mandatory)

senior band (One of youngest accepted into the senior program)

Note: I am the only student at school allowed to take an extra block of studies in order to complete my mandatory course requirements and fulfill prerequisites.

Junior:
english literature pre-AP
french pre-AP
bio AP (allowed to skip Bio 11 honors prereq.)
chem AP
physics b AP
economics (macro/micro) AP
calc bc AP (skipped a few more years of math by taking a placement test)
us history AP

Expecting all 5’s, except for a 4 on apush and chem

Senior Plan:
psych AP
human geography AP
world history AP

eng comp/ eng lit AP (same course, two tests)
stat AP
art history AP
euro history AP

I might self study a few more ap’s (phys c, comp sci, etc.)

EC’s:
I have a very extensive list but the few that im committed to are:

model un (a ton of awards, head junior delegate of club freshman/sophomore years, head senior delegate and president junior/senior, organized delegations to 5 conferences including 1 international conference, teach/train/recruit delegates all by myself, student rep. of school’s club on the district mun council—chair of council during senior year)

bassoon (i’ve played in a major theatre in my city and the performance aired on tv, i also volunteer with city’s symphony orchestra teaching children 6-12 how to play–introductory level, privately tutor junior band students after school for free, played at various festivals, won school awards, playing for 6 years as of senior year)

student government (member of class councils since freshman year, officer of senior class council, organized a ton of events for school (fundraising/senior class events))

founder and president of Ecological conservation club, done a lot of work, really big club, I have a lot of involvement in environmental events around the community (volunteered with a lot of organizations, used experience to start up club)

I do a lot of community volunteering, I have about 500 hours completed doing everything from preparing food at soup kitchens to volunteering at my local boys and girls club

Awards:
A lot of model un awards, a few debate things here and there, a hoard of school awards…blah blah blah

Hook: Attending TASP this summer!

Chances for:
Yale*
Stanford*
Harvard
Princeton
Cornell
Columbia

*Applying EA to one of them
Sorry for the long post =)

I mean you have a good chance of getting in at some if not all of those; however, just because they are ivy league schools and you never know how admission there is, it would be smart to look at some safety schools. What about UW? That’s a great state school and much cheaper than ivy league :). Good luck, I think you have a great shot!

[Cluster Effect anyone?](http://www.collegeconfidential.com/dean/archives/000037.htm)

that isn’t my full list! i just wanted to see how i stack up at those schools, so please chance me according to those specific schools. thanks for the replies though.

i mean they’ll all be tough, so i wouldn’t get your hopes up for one and only one school. its very likely you’ll get into at least one of those schools maybe more, but very unlikely you will get into all of them.

okay seriously, don’t sugar coat things people. i don’t need a confidence boost! don’t think of my hopes, don’t think about my feelings, just tell me what YOU think! thanks

no chance, you’re just like every other applicant

lol thanks PK

O and if it got lost in the other stuff, I’m attending TASP this summer. hopefully that helps a bit?

Great courseload - can the test scores go up??

Self studying AP classes senior year isn’t going to help admissions chances…Do it if you’re passionate about what your studying otherwise it’ll be a waste.

Test scores could be better…especially CR.

Also, Top Schools are reaches for everyone…or so everyone says, probably due to most of them being unpredictable. Good luck.

hey which school are you from? and which tasp? Come join the TASP thread in the summer programs section!

Really, a 620 could be really bad for HYPS, but who knows?

lol as i said, the sat i was a big joke the first time i took it. i regularly score in the high 2200’s - low 2300 on the few practice tests i’ve done (blue book). im planning on studying after TASP and possibly writing a few more sat ii’s next year during october and november. I can easily get in 2200’s for i, hopefully break 2300, i’ll consider ii’s after 21st (i still have my hopes up for an 800 on ush) Also, the 4’s that i mentioned on my aps will either be high 4’s or possible (fingers crossed) low 5’s. finally, the self-studies are for college credit/interest, it might be useful to get some random prereq.s out of the way, or at least see how much i can learn in high school. i’ll figure that out later, but now, chances please :]
Thanks for replying.

Jrock-if I raise my 620 to a 730 (that is what i normally get on practices), would that 620 still look really bad? would it even be taken into consideration?

I’m confused that your school allowed you to take three science APs junior year. And I’m tempted to predict that your predictions may be off the mark.

But your SAT will not get you into Stanford. No way. You have to be a genius or an olympian. I know kids who got in HYP and not Stanford with much better scores and ECs and great GPAs from much more competitive schools (2 kids each year to top schools really isn’t competitive. Better than average, but not competitive).

That said, if you raise your SATs and your AP scores come out as predicted you’ve got a shot.

Bottom line: You’re either a superstar or there are lax standards at your school that allow you to seem that way. If you’re pulling a 4.0 unweighted while take 8 classes and 5 APs, I’m impressed. But there are only so many hours in the day. When do you have time to do community service/model UN/student council/etc. Last I checked it would be phyically impossible to take as many courses as you have simply because there are aren’t enough periods in the day. Be careful on your apps that your hours add up. Colleges will toss your app out if they add up your hours and it seems a) impossible or b)improbable.

at my school, we go by an 8 period system with 4 periods a day. i work really hard to maintain all of my ec’s. also, my school sends one or two to HYSP every year, but usually a handfull end up at schools like dartmouth and upenn, and few others go to cornell/nyu/low-prestige yet recognizable schools. so it is relatively competitive, but i agree, it isn’t andover.

and ses, would you mind elaborating on how one can have a better gpa? i mean, uw 4.0 is as good as it gets on a 4.0 system. and i think i have pretty good ec’s, not a lot of students go to tasp, teach an instrument through their city’s symphony orchestra, perform at a major urban theatre on a televised performance, plan international trips on their own, or simply get as involved with as high positions as i have attained. just wondering, not getting defensive =) thanks for the thoughts!

do something to distinguish yourself from other applicants…

well, if tasp isn’t distinguishable, im not sure there is anything else i can do to distinguish myself. hopefully you know what tasp is!

I never said your GPA wasn’t good. I just said that I’m not sure you have to work as hard for that 4.0 as a kid at another school.

Also: How is UPenn not a top school? Or Cornell?

at my school, they are viewed as generally easier to get into than HYPS

there are a lot more things other than tasp that you can do to distinguish yourself from everyone else…for example, if you’re passionate about the sciences, I would suggest doing research of your own and entering competitions…Intel STS is just one example
