Chance a hodgepodge applicant!

Hey there, thanks in advance for chancing me; of course, I’m happy to chance back if you’d like.

*I’m currently a junior
My stats:
~URM-Asian? [Thai]
~First-generation college student
-Rank: 5/311
-Total GPA: 3.92 [un-weighted]/ 4.28 [weighted]
-SAT I/II: 2120 [I am happy with my score :)], Spanish 680[retaking this year], World History [720], going to take Math II, and Physics in June [alongside Spanish]
-School: small public ~1300+; does not send many to ivies, but has had some luck every couple of years
-Rigor: extremely intense
-AP’s: AP World History [5], AP Biology [5], AP U.S. History, AP Physics B, AP English Lang., AP Calc AB, AP Spanish Lang., AP Psychology, and AP European History

-Plan to take (senior year): AP U.S. Government, AP Chemistry, AP Environ. Sci., AP English Literature, AP Calculus BC, and AP Spanish Literature

Extracurriculars:
-Cross Country
-Varsity Tennis [Fresh./Soph.]*
-Varsity Track [Junior/Senior]*
-NHS [treasurer, running for president]
-California Scholarship Federation [similar to NHS, treasurer, running for VP]
-MUN [president]
-Best Buddies [all four years :)]
-Red Cross Club [VP, president next year]
-Spanish Club [treasurer]
-PTSA [student-representative; soph/junior years]
-Interact
-Key Club
-Science Olympiad Cell Bio., Envir. Chem., Fossils, and Anatomy
-Science Bowl
-Freshmen ASB Treasurer [running for executive President]
-Journalism-Copy Editor [next year Editor-in-Chief]
-Intend to have completed over 200 hours of service [currently ~100 hrs]. I mainly volunteer at a Buddhist organization-Tzu Chi. I teach Spanish there :D

I am interested in: Marketing/Finance, Business, Biomedical Engineering, and International Relations. I have a deep passion for language and biological science. I am learning three dialects of Chinese, Thai, Korean, Japanese, French, and some Portuguese. I am nearly fluent in Spanish. [I was born and raised in the states-English is a given ;)]

I am interested in the following colleges:
-Brown
-Dartmouth
-Yale
-Princeton
-Stanford
-Pomona College
-University of Chicago
-UC Berkeley
-UC Irvine

I will probably write about my multicultural upbringing [Thai, Chinese, and Korean], my experiences from teaching Spanish, and my love for languages. But I know I’ll have to make these topics more interesting than they “already” seem ;)

Even if you only have some comments about the colleges I’m interested in, I’m all ears :)

AP Psychology, AP European History, and AP Spanish Literature will be self-studied. I may also take a try at AP Chem or AP Environmental Sci. for self-study if one is not available as a class.

If you put your intended major down as “International Relations” or “International Business” and NOT “Biomedical Engineering,” you will have a much better shot. Your language study is impressive, to say the least. Because your service and most defined interest are both centered around linguistics, go that route.

You seem to have a pretty good chance everywhere. There are obviously no guarantees, but if you can show your passion in your essays, you are definitely an applicant that will stand out.

Haha, thanks HYPhoper :)

Although I am very interested in International Relations and International Business, I think Bio-Engineering would be something I would be interested in, and it is going to become an integral part of the country by the time I’d graduate.

Anything for me to chance back?

I think you are definitely in the ballpark with your scores/academic record. Really stress on your application what makes you unique, such as your multicultural upbringing! And show passion for your extracurriculars on your app!

-Brown- high reach/low match
-Dartmouth- low/mid match
-Yale- reach (but it is for everyone)
-Princeton- reach (but it is for everyone)
-Stanford- high reach/low match
-Pomona College-mid match (i’m not very familiar with their admissions)
-University of Chicago- high reach/low match
-UC Berkeley- high reach/low match
-UC Irvine- I have no idea

I’m sort of guessing you’re from California? If so, both UC will be matches, especially Irvine.

Haha umm…not quite sure about the others lol. I’m not familiar with their admissions, but I know that UChicago loves unique applicants. you’re pretty unique, you should be fine.

Thanks jfvollegirl :)

princetongirl: if you think I have a low match at UCB, then I think my chances at UCI will be even better. Thanks :)

medio: yup, I’m from South Cal :D

I think people have been a little too optimistic… (You’re an impressive applicant but even still these are some killer schools.)
-Brown - reach
-Dartmouth - reach
-Yale - high reach
-Princeton - high reach
-Stanford - very high reach
-Pomona College - low reach
-University of Chicago - reach
-UC Berkeley - low reach
-UC Irvine - ?

(However, I do think you will probably get accepted to one of the above.)

Thanks, Beowulf. I think if things go my way, that I can present a very nice application when it comes to that next year :)

Nope, no more chances threads for me. I’m just a senior waiting for April 1 :)

Good luck! Good SATs, GPA, rank! Plus URM is def a bonus!
-Brown : pretty good
-Dartmouth: good chance
-Yale,Princeton, Stanford: these are always a reach! but i think you should be hopeful for them because you def have a chance
-Pomona College: im not familiar w/ them
-University of Chicago: I think they will like you! good chance
-UC Berkeley: good chance
-UC Irvine: good chance!

Good luck! Essays will be important, Uchicago and Stanford especially put a lot of weight on essays so be creative! start early and revise. let a lot of people read them…

i know my advise is what everyone says but its all ive got  sorry

I’m not sure that colleges distinguish between types of Asian. If they don’t, you wouldn’t qualify as a URM. You could always call each individual school to ask.

You have a great shot at all of them! Definite in at Irvine, and I’d bet $100 you’re getting into Berkeley. The top privates can be a crapshoot, though. You stand a great chance at UChicago if you can write an original essay.

I applied to both Berkeley and Dartmouth, as well, and they are quite different. Nothing really stands out to me about Berkeley, and the size freaks me out. So anyway, out of curiosity, why are you applying to Berkeley? Does anything aside from cost appeal to you?

Chances back?
http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/what-my-chances/861462-chance-me-dartmouth-brown-top-lacs.html

It looks like you stand a good shot…however my advice would be: lessen the EC list. I think that it’s better to focus in really hard on 3-5 ECs than have a sparser range of 10 ECs, not to be critical though, but that’s just my take. Oh and thanks for chancing me, too.

Any more chances? I chance back :D

The only schools that u listed thataren’t reaches is UCI - Match
UCB - High Match (if you are in state, reach if your international or out of state)
U shud lower ur expectations with those stats, u need a 2250 SAT to compete at those schools despite what others may say. But ur EC"s are fairly strong - if u write excellent essays, u never know. GOod luck.
