With a HS not seen as particularly rigorous, and with not much leadership, and basially just few clubs as EC’s - you will have a difficult task setting yourself apart from many of the applicants to the top 12 schools (incl. Columbia, Penn, Brown, Northwestern, U Chicago)

I would definitely apply to these schools because they are holistic and you may fill some need the adcoms require when building their freshman class - but I would rate these 5 schools as a reach at the moment.

Columbia
Penn
Brown
Northwestern
U Chicago

^^Reaches

Carnegie Mellon University
Cornell University
Penn State University Park
University of Michigan-Ann Arbor
University of Notre Dame

^^These schools (using your current resume) offer a more reasonable chance of positive admission outcomes.

If I raised my SAT score significantly and secured another leadership position (or took a higher position), would this affect my chances much? And when considering the business programs I’m considering at some of these schools, especially Penn’s Huntsman program, would a win at DECA’s international conference this year be of any help to my chances?

^ I am just assessing your chances with what info is available now. Of course improving your SAT score, or improving your leadership will help. Try not to have unrealistic expectations though. The typical SAT improvement for second attempts is something like 30 points. You have yet to take you ACT, so there is a possibility that you could shine on this test and would also improve your chances.

Your SAT II’s will also be important for all of these schools in assessing the rigor of your HS - so preparing for these will help your chances.

Ivies are always reaches, so I wouldn’t say you’d be guaranteed to them. U Chicago and Northwestern are also difficult, so maybe low reaches. CMU, Penn State, UM and Notre Dame are all better chances, I’d say high matches. Good luck :)

Would CMU, Cornell, UM, or ND classify as matches for me or should I be looking for more attainable schools? I’m pretty confident about PSU, but I don’t really like the school and I’m just applying there since it’s my state’s best public school.

If you got your Math up to ~700 (or scored well on the ACT), I would say CMU and ND would be mid-high matches, UM would be a match, Cornell would be a low-mid reach, Chicago would be ~mid-reach, and the rest would be mid-high (but not high) reaches.

At least, that’s how I see it. Good luck.

Brown University- High Reach
Carnegie Mellon University- Low Reach
Columbia University- High Reach
Cornell University- Low Reach
Northwestern University- Reach
Penn State University Park- Match
The University of Chicago- Reach
University of Michigan-Ann Arbor- Match
University of Notre Dame- Match
University of Pennsylvania (Huntsman)- Reach

Like people said before me, step up in leadership positions.

Do you have any hooks? something to make you stand out? any idea of an essay topic for your personal statement?
