Chance a NoVa Student!

So, I go to school in Northern Virginia. Senior, took the hardest course load I possibly could
Took 8 APs

Gender: Male
Ethnicity: White
Nationality: I’m from Eastern Europe
GPA: 3.83 (A bit on the low side, had very hard time junior year due to severe mental illness in family)

SAT:
Math: 670
CR: 670
W: 700

ECs:
Key Club
NHS
FBLA (Officer)
DECA (Officer)
Student Government Association
Varsity Soccer

Why I stand out: Immigrant, Speak different language at home, English second language, Had to cope with close family member having severe mental illnesses)

Basically, I’m wondering if I should apply RD. I’m OOS, but I heard that the admissions staff look favorably upon NoVa.

20 views and no feedback? Haha, common guys, just say whats on your mind, don’t be afraid to hurt my feelings

cas or wharton? class rank? ap scores? sat II?

Wharton. Its like 70 some outa 400, fluctuates I guess. Don’t have AP scores on me, thought they didn’t really matter too much in admissions. SAT II is still pending

Why do admission officers look favorably upon NoVa? (Just curious)

i don’t believe wharton will consider you. this is because of your rank and your 670 SAT math score, which make me question if you could even handle the workload at wharton. also, you need to take 2 SAT Subject tests if you haven’t already, and one of them should be Math 2.

don’t just apply to the #1 b-school. if you are interested in learning about business, apply to other programs as well.

They look favorably upon NoVa because it isn’t a joke, and if you actually have good grades you deserved them. If our scale was a 10 point scale, I’d easily have over a 4.0.

Yeah, I know my SAT math score is a bit low. I’m applying to UVA instate too btw, so thats a good program too.

I just figured I may as well apply to UPenn. Hopefully my essays can demonstrate that numbers aren’t everything

numbers aren’t everything, but based on last year’s results, many of the unhooked who were accepted had stats like 2380SAT1/2360SAT2/top2% in ADDITION to strong recs/essays/leadership

Yeah, i’ve talked to some people, Wharton chances are none to very slim. Would applying to CaS increase my chances? By how much?

And is it possible to transfer from CaS to Wharton if I were to get in?

What school are you from? I’m from NoVa too and I’m applying to Wharton…sigh

don’t try to backdoor wharton. it involves getting a 3.8 GPA during your freshman year at Penn, which is harder than getting into wharton normally.

Just out of curiously Choklit, do you go to Penn? I’m sure it wouldn’t be that hard to get a 3.8 either, since right now, I have a 3.8 and I absolutely do not do anything. If I actually put in some work, it’d be more than feasible.

Plus, thats only freshman year. Applying to Wharton and getting in is much harder, since thats your WHOLE high school career. I legitimately did not know what a GPA was, much less college admissions and all this junk, during my freshman year. Heck, even my sophomore year.

But, you didn’t answer my question, which was “Is getting into CAS harder or easier?”

Getting in to CAS will be easier as long as adcoms don’t think you’re trying to backdoor wharton. and considering your EC’s any mention of wharton in your essays will make it obvious that you are backdooring. however, getting a 3.8 would place you in the top 10% of CAS students, so I maintain that it is harder to transfer into wharton than it is to get admitted as a freshman. the fact that you have a 3.8 in HS right now “without doing anything” is irrelevant. it might even have a negative amount of relevance.

Lol…negative amount of relevance. That’s pretty funny. Actually, it is pretty relevant, because, if I recall correctly, doing work/studying —> leads to better grades —> extremely relevant when you’re talkign about GPA.

Anyways, thanks for your time

The GPA would be negligible if your SAT were higher, and vice-versa. You cannot expect essays to overshadow the overall weak objective portion of your application, because although numbers are not everything, they are something (especially when Math and Wharton are concerned). Also, Eastern European equals white, so don’t expect that to win you any race points. I would summarily say you don’t have the best chance at all, but I wish you good luck.
