Chance a Pastafarian? UC's, Cal Poly, UIUC

Hi everyone! Could you please chance me for the UC’s, Cal Poly, and UIUC? I’d like to go to UCSD, UCSB, or Cal Poly in particular, but would like to be chanced for the other UC’s too. I didn’t take school too seriously until junior year, but hope I have a shot at a decent university. My intended major is Computer Science, which I know can be hard to get into.

School: Large public in California, average
Rank: Top 15%, but might be top 10% after my second semester grades

UC GPA: 3.9

I got A’s and B’s and a couple C’s sophomore year, but got mostly A’s and a couple of B’s junior year taking hard classes. I took Honors Chemistry my sophomore year, and took APUSH, AP Physics B, AP Calculus AB, AP English Lang and Spanish 3 Honors my junior year. Taking Honors Human Physiology, AP English Lit, AP Government, AP Econ, AP Calculus BC, and AP Stats my senior year. Also learning AP Computer Science this summer and taking the AP CS exam next year.

SAT: 2230 w/ 1520 on CR + M (CR-780, Math-740, Writing-710)
PSAT: 200

My PSAT score wasn’t too good, but I took the SAT in May after a couple of days of studying and was able to do relatively well. I took it again in June and am waiting to get my results.

EC’s:

Classical Indian Music: have been singing for 9 years, have competed at numerous venues and have participated in many events - weekly practice with events monthly

Internship at a Software Startup this summer - QA testing + mobile app development for Android, work around 3-4 hours a day, so ~170 hours of work by the end of the summer.

Hospital volunteering: Planning to get 100+ hours done by the end of the summer, currently have ~50

Member of the Disaster Committee for my local Red Cross chapter - helped put together event at a local museum that had thousands of attendees, meetings every two weeks for ~3 hours

Summer camp counselor for two years - ~200 hours of commitment

Volunteer for a local religious organization - helped cook food and serve the homeless - ~50 hours

Sports: Basketball and Cross Country Freshman Year

I slacked off my freshman and sophomore years, partly due to existential crises that I went through, but changed schools my junior year and felt right at home. My grades reflect that and I hope I have the EC’s and scores to get me into a good university. Thanks for reading, please let me know if you need any more info!

Hey, you’re going to get into several of the UCs given you have a strong application. Cal Poly will accept you as well. I know people who weren’t very competitive get in as an engineering and a computer science major. Is your school competitive? You have a 3.9, but you’re top 10%?

My school isn’t very competitive, we have a class of around 480 people. There is a group of around 10 elite students, but after that there’s a drop off, with around 30-40 people vying for a spot in the top 10%.

What’s your rank, if you don’t mind? My class had 573, and I was 8, which made me top 2%. You shouldn’t have a problem getting into those schools though. I got into all of the UCs I applied for including UCLA, UCSD, UCI, UCD, and UCR. I had a 3.98 with a 1750 SAT score. On your UC application, I suggest you show leadership. It’s easy to list extracurricular activities, but it takes effort to show how you’re a leader. Good luck.

64 out of 480, so around the 13th percentile. I got a 4.5 GPA first semester and a 4.3 second semester, so I might be able to crack the top 10%. You’re recommending that I show the leadership on my essays?

Well fingers are crossed for you to crack top 10%. I think talking about how you’ve grown as a person in your personal statement is very important. Your SAT scores and UC GPA alone are reflective of a good student. I have plenty of friends who got into the top UCs, and they weren’t close to as successful as you are. Take your time on your application. You’re a senior this year?

Thanks! This is the summer before senior year for me, so I’m technically a senior. I’ll start brainstorming for the personal statement this summer and begin it, these last few years have been a whirlwind of change for me and I hope to capture that in my essay. I really appreciate all the help, thanks!

Of course, I feel like I’ve only pointed out that you’re a great student. Work hard senior year, believe me it pays off in the end. I just got my senior semester report card today, and it’s better to leave satisfied. If you need any more help with the UC application, you can refer to a review of my application.

@kathyandrade: I’m taking a number of AP’s senior year and feel pretty good about most of them, so I’ll definitely work hard. Your other post was pretty relieving, it’s stressful seeing all of these people list amazing stats and getting into top-tier universities. Thanks!

I’ve been looking around and want to apply to Carnegie Mellon for its CS program and the University of Alabama for the amount of financial aid they could give me, could anyone chance me for those? I’d also love to learn some safeties that I should apply to.

Bump? I’d like to hear how I stand for the UC’s + Cal Poly and maybe CMU for Computer Science.

Bump! Anyone?
