Chance a SoCal kid for Cal

Scien I attend a public school in CA. Can you please estimate my chances for either l&s undecided or ncr environmental Econ ? My UC gpa is a 3.59. Very low. I know. Both my brothers currently attend Cal
I wrote a pretty good essay on the additional information section on the app about why I went from a 4.0 student freshman year to a low gpa sophomore year and how I improved as a student this year.

Being a black immigrant, you’d probably have a better shot at a top private school, as you look pretty good relative to a lot of black applicants. Unfortunately for you, Berkeley tries to practice race blind admissions, and your application wouldn’t look so impressive.

ncr is probably the easiest admit at Cal. UC loves applicants that overcome adversity (particularly from URMs), so if your essay sends that message, you have an excellent shot.

Cal doesn’t officially consider race, but if you use your personal statement to talk about how race or your experiences as an immigrant have affected you, they can certainly consider that. Your GPA is still pretty low, though… I think Cal would be a reach for you. USC might be an option.

WHat about peace and conflict studies?
How do my stats look for ucla? Pretty low right?

USC is amazing though and I really hope I can get it

I know more about the transfer admissions process, and I know that major choice plays a significant role there, but I don’t think it’s quite as relevant for freshman applicants.

Since you’re not looking at a technical major, if you really want to attend Cal or UCLA you should consider doing community college for two years. It’s like starting over–your high school GPA and test scores won’t even be considered. That said, a private really might be your best option.

BTW… I’m just curious: what do you mean by “African American immigrant?”

 1. Black and an immigrant (using African American as a synonym for black)
 2. African by birth and an immigrant to America
 3. Have one African parent and one American parent and was born abroad

…or something else?

African parents. I was born in Africa. Came here in 2nd grade

Btw I forgot to mention that I have an ebook published on kindle
