Chance A Soon to be Senior

OK though i messed up BIG time my frosh/soph years of high school, I got everything together in my junior year. I am an IB student, and I scored a 27 on my ACT, I have yet to take the SAT. I am on the soccer team, debate team, mock trial, and I have done a lot of volunteer work (I have over 200 service hours), I completed an internship at an Art Center in the southern Beverly Hills area of Chicago, and I performed in two plays there.

Is Berkeley a match for me? I want to be a lawyer, and I think going here would be a good precursor for when i go to Yale Law.

How bad are we talking for your soph grades? A few B’s, for example, won’t ruin you.
If you can improve your ACT or score pretty well on your SAT, coupled with a strong personal statement, I’d say you have a decent shot of getting in.

How do you have your IB scores already if you’re gonna be a senior?

Internship/Work Experience

 • Did internship at IBM concerning international rights and uses.
 • Did internship at yahoo concerning advertisement.
 • Have worked as a soccer referee for 3 years.

Recs:
-One from my Spanish teacher, that should be really good
-One from my History teacher that should also be good because I was able to right a pretty convincing letter of why i choose her to do mine.
-Counselor recommendation should also be very good as our family are very close and get together often outside of school.

Cons: Been to the principle’s office mutliple times in high school (around 7 times from various things such as fights/ordering 100 boxes of pizza to the school and such but max punishment was detention for 2 days)… I know my test scores aren’t great, but hopefully other areas of my application will make up for it.

Colleges planning to apply

University of Texas
Rice
UPenn
Dartmouth (legacy, not sure if that helps)
Texas A&M (legacy, parent is former faculty)
Yale (legacy also…My dad is a teacher so he needed a PHD, hence all the colleges)
Stanford
Berkley
Brown
Northwestern

Do some community service, try to get at least 100 hours by the time you apply. Also try to improve your SAT/SAT II scores. I mean right now they’re around avg. for Berkeley but you want to make yourself competitive right?

sorry…accidently posted my chance in urs…

I think it really depends on the degree of “messedup”, please be a bit more specific

How do you have your IB scores already if you’re gonna be a senior?

Lol, im being very optimistic :P

^I was optimistic too lol, but senioritis hit and I decided not to study. But they really don’t matter to Berkeley as you won’t have most of them anyway.

wow, an internship at yahoo and IBM! very impressive. As far as the detentions goes, I doubt its very significant, especially if they were towards the beginning of your high school years.

No problem with Detentions. I had a Saturday School for me, but chances are they don’t even know about it because you’re not putting it on the application and unless your school tells them then they won’t even know. But even if they did it’s no problem. They just don’t want delinquents with criminal records

I think you have a great chance. You have a lot of extra curriculars that are diverse and interesting. Good luck :)
