Chance a STEM Major

Reaches: Rice (ED), Penn (lots of people from school applying :-S including my godlike best friend), Duke, Yale (yeet lol), maybe Stanford (YEET LOL)
Matches-ish: Case Western (EA), Brandeis, Lehigh (latter two if I don’t get in to Rice or CWRU)
Safeties: UTK (already accepted), UNC Charlotte (EA/Priority)

Intended Majors: Ecology and Evolutionary Biology, Astrophysics, Earth Science/Geology. Linguistics minor if school offers it.

Stats:
ACT: 36 (all sections 36 except Science, 35) (I took this right after my sophomore year, so idk if that looks extra cool or not. Also, my graduating class of ~375 has 9 36 scorers, and I don’t know what my school profile says about that)
SAT: 1560 single sitting (800 M), 1600 superscore, 6/6/8 writing
Subject tests: Math 2 800, Chem 770, Bio E 750, German 610 (NOT sending)
GPA: 4.00/4.59
AP scores: 5 on APHG, Bio, Chem, APUSH, Lang. 4 on Physics 1
Class rank: not ranked (oof) because I’m just outside of the top 10%.
White female, upper middle class but with twin sister. No hooks, but I can write the gay essay for Duke.

ECs:
Climbing (9-12, actually 4-12, 10 hrs/week): I compete and it’s fun. Major focus in my essays.
Science Bowl (9-12, captain 11, 3 hrs/week): Also fun. We made it to the Round of Eight at the regional tournament last year. Informal leadership role this year.
Science Olympiad (9-12, VP Academics 12, 2-3 hrs/week): I do pretty well on the academic events :slight_smile: Team won Regionals last year.
GSA (9-12, VP 11, President 12, 1 hr every other week): Not the most active GSA.
Linguistics Olympiad (9-12, VP 11, President 12, 1 hour every other week): Fun and competitive club. The last two presidents got into Rice :slight_smile:
Work (9-12, 3 hrs/week): I’ve worked at my climbing gym since May of freshman year as party and events staff.
Biology Olympiad Club (9-12, cofounder and technically VP (didn’t say that tho), 1 hour every other week): prepare for USABO
German Club (9-10, 1 hr every other week): Learn about German culture and welcome exchange students from our sister city

Awards:
Tennessee Governor’s School for Computational Physics (summer after 11)
-fairly selective, learned a lot of Fortran 95 and a lot of math. really really fun
USABO Semifinalist (10)
National German Exam Gold Award (9)
AP Scholar with Distinction (11)
NM Commended (11)
Jefferson Book Award (lol) (11)

Current schedule:
APES
AP Lit
AP CS A
AP Macro/US Gov (every other day)
AP Calc BC
AP Physics C

Recs:
AP Chem teacher: should be pretty good, but I wasn’t one of her most exceptional students
AP Lang teacher: same, but I participated a /lot/ and read all of the books (a stunning rarity)
Climbing coach (Rice only): should be really good, as I’m one of the more motivated kids on the team

Essays:
Common App: pretty good, about my fear of heights, relates back to Science Bowl
Why Rice: very good
Why majors: very good
Perspectives: phat L

I think you need to improve your test scores first.

Hi @awesomepolyglot ,

Stats: You’re fine, don’t sweat it
ECs: Pretty good since you have awards to back them up
Awards: Great job

All ivies still reaches. Most schools like UMich, middle/low UCs, and BU can be considered matches/low reaches.

You’re good. Now make sure your app and supps are on target. Also, any comm service?

@GoBears2023 Can’t afford the UCs… oof.
@lookingforward None :confused:

@awesomepolyglot I’m sorry to hear that …

Well, I’m from TN and my parents don’t make upward of 250K per year… we get by fine tho :slight_smile: I’m not heartbroken.
