Chance a transfer for the School of Information?

I go to Macomb Community College, which is in-state. I initially wanted to pursue engineering, but changed to IT after taking some courses. Some engineering-related courses I have credit for are Calc 1+2, Linear Algebra, Physics 140+141, and EECS 183. I didn’t do as well as I had hoped in those classes, which is why my GPA went down. I did well in my programming class though, but I liked the idea of combining UX/UI design with Software Development, which is why I’m applying to the SoI.

  • 3.48 GPA
  • 48 credits
  • First gen college student, low income
  • Extracurriculars/Awards: Won 1st place in diversity writing contest, and was featured in college newspaper. I also designed and programmed a few websites.

I know my GPA is low, but will my engineering course rigor make up for it? What are my chances?

I’m no expert, but your GPA seems low for UMich. How did you do on your ACT/SAT? Computer Science is fiercely competitive these days, lots of interest in it. On the other hand, I know there is a push to integrate more low income, first gen students…IF the scores are there. If you can make really exceptional scores on your ACT/SAT it can’t hurt to try. Good luck. Also, make sure to take a hard look at the transfer guide to see which of your courses will be accepted by UMich.
