Chance an above-average student with unexceptional SATs

What’s up? It’s my first time posting here, so I thought I should say hi first.

Profile:

 • Hispanic
 • Small Private School in Puerto Rico
 • 3.8 GPA (unweighted)
 • Rank: 10/46 TOP 25% (Is this bad? I go to a small school, so class rank isn’t really as big a factor as it would be in a large school. I am the only male in the top 10…)

SAT:
Verbal: 640
Math: 590
Writing: 650

Total:
1230/1600
1880/2400

I took the SATIIs this month, so I will not see the scores until the 25th. However, I know for a fact that I got an 800 in Spanish.

ECs:
-Varsity Outdoor Soccer (10,11,12)
-Varsity Indoor Soccer (10,11,12)
-Taekwondo (10,11)
-Muay Thai (12)
-Jiu-Jitsu (12)
-National Honor Society (10,11,12)
-Science Club (9,10,11,12)
-Student Council Member (9,10,11,12)
-Class Representative (9,12)
-Class Vice President (11)
-Presidential Classroom Member (11)
-Culinary Arts Club (10,11)
-Theater (12)

I am applying to the following institutions:

-Boston University
-Florida International University
-George Washington University
-Tulane
-NYU
-Texas A&M
-University of Texas at Austin
-University of Virginia
-University of Florida
-Rice
-Johns Hopkins

My top choice is BU.

(BUMP) I added EC’s

Just wondering…Puerto Rico, as a US territory, doesn’t count as international, right?

Boston U - match
FIU - unfamiliar
GWU - high match
Tulane - high match
Texas A&M - match
UT-Austin - match
UVA - reach
UF - match
Rice - reach
JHU - low reach

You’re an URM (underrepresented minority) which is a big plus, but you’ll still have some trouble getting into Rice, UVA, and JHU with those SAT scores.

Chance me back?
http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/what-my-chances/614855-do-not-click-button-if-you-do-though-chance-me-i-ll-chance-you-back.html</a></p>

your NOT A MATCH for UT Austin- You arent in the top 10%. I think A&M is a match

Echo- You are correct. PR is not considered international.
You didn’t mention NYU…do I have a chance there?

iambored- Would UT really put so much importance on class rank if my class is so small? I would be top 10% for sure in most U.S. public schools…

Oh, my Dad has been living in Texas for more than a year…would this help out in any way, including maybe in tuiton fees?

If any others want to chance me it would be greatly appreciated. :)

i live in college station, so i know a lot about A&M. you would have automatic acceptance there, i’m almost positive that all it takes is above a 1200 on the SAT (V&M).
tuition is small, so that’s good. however, all the other schools that you’re applying to are in big, metropolitan areas and they’re kind of liberal. A&M is so conservative, lots of rednecks, and college station is not a big town. going by your other choices, i don’t think you would like it here. UT would be more your style, but your chances decrease significantly.

UT Austin has very rigid top ten percent rules. most people not in the top ten who get accepted are the people who go to really competetive schools and have amazing stats. yours just won’t be that dazzling compared to everybody elses. them’s the breaks, right?

you would for sure get into tulane, they accept 44% of their applicants.
if i were you, i would definitely apply. tulane is very freehanded with their merit scholarships, and since you’ve got decent scores AND you’re from puerto rico, i bet they’d give you a sweet deal.
but that doesn’t change the fact that it takes 50K a year to go there, so that’s a downer.

for everything else, i agree with Echo049.

heymadeline- Yeah, you read me like a book  I am not very interested in going to A&M, but I applied out of necessity…my dad wants me to apply to schools in TX. If I send an application to UT Austin, do I automatically get considered for the other UTs (like UT Arlington?), or do I have to apply to each one individually?

Nevertheless, I am planning to go to UT Austin for an interview during my school break, since I’ll be visiting my dad at TX.

Oh, I have a question: Does high match mean it’s harder to get into than a match? At first look, I thought it meant a high match was better for you, but I’ve been looking at a few posts in this forum and it gave me the impression that a high match was harder than a match…

Anyone else?

i think that if you apply for only UT Austin, you are only considered for UT Austin.
you have to apply separately for the other UT branch schools.
if you end up really wanting to go to Austin then you could go to UT Arlington or UT San Antonio for your first year and then transfer to UT Austin.
that’s what a lot of the people who aren’t in the top ten do.

Ok, that’s cool.

If anybody else wants to chance me, it’d be appreciated ;)

Bump to the top :)

Bump

Does anyone know the answer to my question?
If anyone else wants to chance me (or add my chances to NYU) it’d be great ;)

Boston University - in
-Florida International University- in
-George Washington University- most likely in (good luck affording this)
-Tulane - not sure
-NYU - again not sure
-Texas A&M - not sure
-University of Texas at Austin - maybe in
-University of Virginia - not sure (they are extremely picky)
-University of Florida - in
-Rice -not sure good luck though!
-Johns Hopkins -again this is another picky school, but good luck.

I want to be honest, most schools are focusing less on the SATs now, than they previously did. They say its the first thing they look at, but in all honesty I had bad SAT scores and I got into colleges just fine.
