Chance an aspiring philosopher

Hey guys, I’m a junior at a semi-competitive school. I hope to someday become a philosopher and I would like to be chanced at HYP and Stanford.

School Type: Public
Race/Gender: Male
Prospective Major: Philosophy
Unweighted GPA: 4.0
Weighted GPA: 4.78
Class rank: 1/603

SAT: 2380

SAT 2: Latin, English Literature, and Spanish all 800s

AP Tests Taken: BC Calc (5), Physics (5), Statistics (4), Biology (5), U.S History (5), Government (5), English Language (5), Spanish (5).

AP Classes Next Year: MV Calc/Linear Algebra, Chem, Econ, Latin

Subjective:

Research on the foundations of logic with a philosopher from a local university. I published a paper with him and we were interviewed by the school’s newspaper. I have published several papers with this professor including papers on ethics, logic, epistemology, and metaphysics. Him and I are also currently writing a book on ontological principles.

I am the state president of my church’s youth group. I am also occasionally invited to lecture to the congregation on a biblical lesson in place of the pastor on Sunday mornings.

My church’s Pastor and I sometimes hold “question nights” where him and I sit on a panel and the congregation asks us questions pertinent to the bible.

I am the Co-president of my schools Debate Club and Founder of my schools Philosophy Club. Both Clubs have around 60 members.

I also started a tutoring business where I tutor kids from grades K-12 in all subjects and I tutor them for the ACT and SAT. I have made around 25,000 dollars from this yearly.

A big activity of mine is reading. It probably doesn’t count as an EC but I‘m not sure. I read mostly philosophical books, probably one a week.

Awards:
Linguistics Olympiad Finalist
National AP Scholar
National Merit Finalist

Thank you all and have a great day :)

I’m also planning to major in philosophy. (Maybe we’ll encounter each other someday!)

I would say you have a very, very good chance. Your record is ridiculously better than my own, and I thought I had reason to be confident.

Now chance me!

Thanks, I appreciate it.

Great chances, just make those essays and interviews shine!

Thanks for the insight :)

No more comments? :(

First, it’s “HE and I,” not “him and I.” Second, you’ll get in. Just make sure you don’t come across as arrogant in your essays, because even when you’re not it can seem that way when you have that great of a resume.

I’d like to say you’ll get in, and I believe you will, but ivies are notoriously unpredictable, so you can never be 100% sure. Good luck :)

Chance me?

lol thanks for the help Jimbo, I’ve never been a huge grammar fan.

Wow. This is amazing. Accepted to all of them.

lol thank you so much.

What’s wrong with he and I, in reality? Doesn’t seem like a very important distinction.

Anyway, my only qualm is that I don’t see how you can be an aspiring philosopher. Philosophy isn’t something you have to be certified to do; you philosophize as soon as you start thinking about big ideas. Besides, seems like you’re already an established philosopher, at least on some level ;)

All that being said, I love your chances.

Oh my goodness. You seriously have the best resume I have ever seen on this site. If you aren’t accepted into at least 3/4 schools, I will be insanely surprised. That is amazing, that tutoring business. I want to start something like that in my town, but the population is so small that it just wouldn’t work. Congrats on being so successful in high school! If you don’t get in to these schools there is something seriously wrong with the application process.

Chance me back?

Wow, thank you guys so much. I really wasn’t even going to apply to these schools.

Dude. You are seriously like amazing. One of the best apps on this site. I say in at all. Good luck dude ;]]

Your work with the philosophy professor is certainly impressive. Scores and grades are great, lots of ECs, you’ve got your own tutoring business – I would say you’ve got an above average shot at these schools.

Anyone have any advice on what I should do to improve?

All I have to say is: Wow.

If you want to improve even more, I would recommend getting more awards. Your ECs are fine. Keep up academic strength.

As for awards, with experience in philosophy I would recommend entering those Ayn Rand essay contests. You don’t necessarily have to agree with her, but a philosophical mindset would be useful in analyzing her brand of epistemology. If you win, you’d be up a good deal of money and have a measure of prestige (I should say a greater measure of prestige).

I’m not sure what else you could do, other than enter essay contests and maintain performance.

Just FYI Philosopher isn’t a valid profession unless you have insanely rich parents hahaha

If you don’t “sell out” you’ll end up becoming a professor

Good luck
