Chance an Average Asian

Thanks for chancing. I think you’re good for all except maybe Harvard and MIT. Those might require higher grades on the SATs (I believe they are more grade-focused).Other than that, looks really good. Keep it up!

lamename -A lot of what you say is true. On the other hand, let’s look at the data published by Yale (Harvard omits this particular data). 80% of the students have SAT scores in the 700-800 range for each category. The middle of their mid 50% range is 2235. With MIT, 88% of the last class had Math scores of 700-800. So while certainly a student has a chance with lower scores, the odds are long. People, including me sometimes, certainly may state things in a bit of an overly absolute manner, but when the odds get pretty long that way it is good to be sure the applicant understands that so that they are realistic about their chances. Same with grades. A high GPA is indeed rather meaningless without courseload, and sometimes without rank, but one that is low is rarely because the school is that tough. But you are right in spirit, sometimes people spout nonsense, other times probably too pessimistic about chances.

What information are you referring to?

Applicants with 2010+ are not necessarily very competitive and are likely admitted at extremely low rates. And it is important to note that no other top school seems to practice the threshold consideration method that MIT does, so to state that generally is to mislead.

Nobody’s reading my questions…:

-Is only 2 SAT II scores enough or should I really really try to self-study chem and take that? Or should I focus only on SAT I?

-Is SAT my only weakpoint? Or are there more?

And another question: How much of a long shot are Yale and Northwestern for me?

Focus on the SAT Reasoning Test.

Everything else seems strong.

Which SAT books do you guys recommend?

As I describe in my guide[/url”>http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/sat-preparation/955109-silverturtles-guide-sat-admissions-success.html]guide, I recommend the Official SAT Study Guide. This is a near-concensus among high scorers.

If I plan to self-study a lot for senior year since not all the courses I want to study are offered at my school, how can I indicate my intent to independently study to colleges b/c having 5 classes senior year looks weak and doesn’t reflect my entire capacity for learning.

Anyone? *10char

Bump******

No problem for you to get in CMU and Rochester.
Harvard, Princeton and MIT are hard to say (not only for you, for everybody) but you should consider to bring up your test scores.

dvtran - obviously you can keep bumping this, but you are not likely to hear anything new. This last post is a great example of repeating what has already been said 10 times.
