Chance an incoming junior?

Hey y’all! Today marks one month until I start my junior year, and I need to really know where I stand for college admissions. I go to a large (1700+ kids in my class) public Texas High school, am upper middle class, and Indian. I want to major in international business or finance. My targets and reaches are: UW Seattle, UT Austin, Rutgers, Texas A&M, Penn State, University of Georgia, SMU, IU Kelley, UC Davis, SDSU, and University of Florida. I’ve posted my stats on here before, but I’ve come with more information and new opportunities under my belt. Unlike the previous posts where I’ve added my stats, I’ve only added current things I’ve actually done instead of also adding things I plan on doing in the future.

ACADEMICS:

  • 4.06/5.0 W GPA
  • 3.84/4.0 W GPA
  • Taking SAT soon
  • School doesn’t do class rank but they group you into “quartiles.” You’re told if you’re in the top 10% (within the first quartile). I’m in quartile one but not top 10% so I’m somewhere between the top 11% and top 25% of my class.
  • I plan to take 10 AP Classes throughout high school. I’ve taken two AP classes (APHUG in 9th and AP World in 10th) and got 5s on their exams. Junior year I’m taking AP Stats, APES, APUSH, and AP Lang

ECs:

  • Student Council (9)
  • NJHS/NHS (9–) - Try for officer senior year
  • MUN (10–) - Try for officer senior year. I did try for officer this year but didn’t get selected.
  • DECA (10–) - Try for officer senior year
  • Peer Leadership, this is where I mentor freshmen students (10–)
  • Principal’s Advisory Committee (10–)
  • Library Volunteer (10–)
  • Peer Tutoring (11–) - Try for officer senior year
  • Event Coordination Internship with a Texas Environmental Action Initiative
  • Paid Sales and Marketing Intern for a startup in the custom clothing industry
  • I have an interview tomorrow for an opportunity to be on the board of directors (business related position) for an international 501(c)(3) nonprofit so this will be nice if I get the opportunity.

AWARDS:

  • Outstanding Effort in Biology (9)
  • Honorable Mention in Scholastic Art and Writing Competition (9)
  • Gold Key in Scholastic Art and Writing Competition (10)
  • Silver Key in Scholastic Art and Writing Competition (10)
  • HRC Honorable Delegate at TXMUN Regional Fall Summit (10)

I’d also like to wonder what are some good schools that aren’t on my list that I could maybe get in to (no budget, my parents just told me to focus on the quality rather than cost as it is not an issue for us). Thanks so much for taking the time to read this and I appreciate any tips!

I really thing it’s too early to chance you - but not to look at schools (last paragraph).

What do you want to do with International Business? Is there a language of choice? Obviously your SAT will matter.

Everything you listed - too early to tell - but you are missing U of South Carolina which is #1 for International Business. FIU also isn’t on your list.

But there’s a bunch of schools out there.

You listed names - but are these schools you’ve been to or like? Do you want the large, football type ,rah rah schools. Does weather or geography matter, etc.

To me, this just seems a random list you pulled from a rank but think about what you actually want in your school and four year experience.

And make sure you take Calculus by 12th grade…if you’re on track for it (I notice stats which is why I’m mentioning it - Calc is more important).

Good luck.

With respect to potential additions to your list, look into Moore.

Since the UC’s and Cal states calculate their GPA’s for admission purposes using only 10-11th grades, it is too early to chance you.

Make sure if you to apply that you meet all the A-G course requirements for eligibility.

They are also test blind and offer little to no financial aid to Non-California residents. Make sure your patents are OK in being full pay with costs upward to $80 K/year.

Below are the links to the 3 UC GPA and CSU GPA calculators.

SDSU admits mainly on GPA, HS rigor, number of A-G courses taken above the minimum, major related course grades, First generation and Local admission status. Essays, EC’s and LOR’s are not considered for admissions.

UC’s admit based on 13 areas of criteria: How applications are reviewed | UC Admissions

I’ve visited the ones close by and/or I have relatives at the other schools. I still need to tour a few more

Do you, by any chance, know I few schools with a smaller Greek life? That’s one of my criteria and I’ve kept that in mind with researching colleges

This is my concern - you should find schools that fit you - more than they are big names. Many on your list - UGA, UF, etc. will have large Greek life.

How about size - would you like a smaller school? For example, Trinity in San Antonio has international business and finance - 30% participate but it’s a smaller school and while I don’t know about greek life, they note dues of $250 a semester for sororities and $350 for fraternities - so it’s likely not huge.

I’d also look at your language of interest. Most international business programs will require a language.

U Denver is known for International Business - it’s a wealthier population but 18% show greek life.

Miami U has an IB Minor - great business school. It has Greek life - ut not sure of your gender, the sororities live in dorms vs. houses I believe.

How about UTD and UTSA??

I really think you should step back and figure out budget and what you want in a school. Which have you visited and why do you like them? Which have you visited and what didn’t you like them.

Your test will tell us more and we know little about your rigor - specifically math and science.

Thanks
