Chance an Unlikely Candidate

Hello everyone, I know this may seem like a huge stretch, but was hoping I could have your honest opinion, should I even bother applying? Thank you for your help.

My Stats:

Iranian Male
Weighted GPA 10-11 Grade: 3.67
Rank: Top 30%
SAT I: 1820 (Retaking in October)
SAT IIs: Bio M: 570 and US history 540. (Retaking in November)
ACT: Took it today…

Intended Major: Bioengineering

EC’s + Awards + Leadership + Volunteering:

secretary treasurer for the Stock Market Analysis Club - 3 years
High School Volleyball - 3 years
Model United Nations Captain
Summer Bio-Technology Camp (received academic achievement award from the camp)

NCS Scholar Athlete Award
Volleyball Coach’s Award
Academic Achievement Letter
Most Improved Student Freshman Year (English Department)

These are the numbers of hours I will have before November 31…
Youth Action Council: 20 hours
Lawrence Hall of Science: 20 hours
High School Athletic Training:200 hours
Peer Tutoring: 100 hours (The tutoring was not through my high school; essentially, my parents friends asked me if I could tutor their son, I volunteered to do it for free, does this count as volunteering? I could prove this by having the parents write a letter or something?)

I am a manager at the store I work at, I have been working there for 1 1/2 years.
I am in Leadership at my High School, I was voted team leader in the class. (Me and five other team leaders will be making major decisions for the student body)

I have taken three college courses at my local community college
Bio Sciense 101, Psychology 210, Nutrition

I realize my GPA absolutely kills any chance I had at getting into USC, I made some poor choices, and now realize (unfortunately its too late) just how effed I really am. Thank you for your opinion.

I’m sure you’ve seen the latest Freshman Profile-

If your latest ACT is over 30, that could put you over the top. College courses are a big plus. You have great ec’s with good leadership experiences. Pull out some excellent essays and that could be your hook.

Good luck!

Hello cc411, thank you for your input. It sounds great to know that higher test scores, and a great essay/reccomendation can put me over the top. I have always had my eye on USC, and knowing that there is some sort of change to attend. Can anyone give me advice on how I can improve my applicant profile, (I know i’m pretty late in the game to be worried about this. Thank you.

If you can get a high ACT score, it can offset your GPA a bit. My GPA wasn’t that great (came from a competitive HS, but still probably a bit low for USC), but my ACT scores were pretty high and I’m sure my teacher recommendations were great.

Thanks for the response akalboy, I took the ACT yesterday, and I dont know if I should retake it or not (The results come in after registration for the next test) I am also registered to retake the SAT in October, and the SAT IIs in november.

I have two questions regarding admission:

Are the SAT IIs required or reccomended? If so, how many Sat IIs should I take? Is the Math II SATII required for the USC school of engineering? I looked on the USC website, but it confused me more than it helped me because it has two different things written on each page.

Also, how generous is USC in giving scholarships and grants (aside from Cal Grants). If an applicant comes from a “well-off” family, does USC even consider some sort of scholarships?

Thank you for all of your help, your feedback is greatly appreciated.

Sincerely,
Bay Kid

Also…How does USC calculate freshman GPAs? Thanks for all of your help.

From the USC Admission website FAQs-

“Are SAT Subject exams required?
We only require SAT Subject tests from freshman applicants who do not attend a regionally accredited high school (e.g., home school, some non-accredited parochial or community based programs, even some newer schools). These students must submit three SAT Subject exams, including one in mathematics, in addition to the SAT or ACT. For all other applicants, these exams are optional, but recommended. We find them helpful in evaluating applications for merit scholarships.”

If you submit your application by December 1, you will automatically be eligible for a scholarship from USC. These scholarships are need-blind but are usually given to high achieving students.
