Chance and Match Me!

I’m curious about my odds of getting into Penn or Yale, so the main purpose of this thread is to get chanced for them; however, as a means of figuring out where I truly am right now, I’d also like to hear a few schools – say, 3-5 – that you would consider a dead match for my profile.

GPA: 4.8 (on a 5.0 scale; but 4.9 is the best possible cumulative)

Rank: N/A

AP: U.S. History (5), World History (5), Environmental Science (5), Calculus AB (Current), Spanish (Current), U.S. Government and Politics (Current)

Course Rigor: Always the highest level available; the only exceptions would be Spanish (has no honors level class until junior year at my school, sadly, which is why I added the GPA disclaimer above) and possibly APES (I chose it because I’m interested in the subject, but “harder” sciences like Biology and Chemistry were available). This year, I’m taking Honors British Literature instead of AP Literature and Composition, too.

SAT: 2240 (730 CR, 740 M, 770 W)

ACT: 33 (35 E, 33 M, 31 R, 33 S), 33 (35 E, 31 M, 35 R, 31 S)

SAT II: U.S. History (800)

Extracurriculars:

SPORTS

 • Soccer (9th grade for school; 10th-12th intramural)
 • Intramural Basketball (9th-12th)
 • Light-Travel Baseball (9th-12th)
 • Ultimate Frisbee (11th-12th)

CLUBS

 • Spanish Club (9th-12th)
 • Environmental Education Club (9th-12th)
 • Debate Club (9th-11th; club folded this year)
 • Mock Trial Club (11th-12th; Vice President)
 • Ultimate Frisbee Club (11th-12th)
 • World Affairs/Model UN Club (12th)
 • National Honor Society (11th-12th)

JOBS/VOLUNTEERING

 • Youth Soccer Referee (11th-12th)
 • TOPSoccer (11th-12th; program to coach mentally and physically disabled children)
 • Stream Cleanup (9th-12th; worked with a local watershed organization)

So, there’s my profile. Like I said above, I’m just looking to get chanced for two schools – Penn and Yale – and, if you’re in the mood, I’d like to hear a few examples of what you’d consider a match school for me.

Thanks in advance, and I promise I’ll repay the favor by giving feedback on your chance threads (not sure if that’s the standard on College Confidential or not, but I’ll just do it out of common courtesy)!

EDIT: Oh, and I’m White/Caucasian, by the way – so, I won’t get any affirmative-action advantages or anything like that.

My apologies if bumping is frowned upon by College Confidential, but I’ll do it this once to find out. Feedback would be greatly appreciated!

Im actually looking for a chance myself so I would takr my feedback with a grain of salt. I think you have a good chance at those schools. Your test scores could be a bit higher and your extracurricular activities could be more extensive but your gpa is awesome!

The thing about the Ivies is that they’re reach schools for virtually everyone. You could have a 2400 SAT and a perfect GPA with 49382934 ec’s but your chances of getting in would only be a tiny bit better than the next person.

That being said, you have very good stats, but it’s hard to match someone when I don’t know your preferences. Go here [College Admissions, Search, and Financial Aid Help from College Confidential - College Admissions, Search, and Financial Aid Help from College Confidential](http://www.collegeconfidential.com/college_search/) and put in your stats and preferences in the side and it should give you some good colleges to look at!

@TheMan - Thanks for the feedback! I agree that I’d look a bit better if the scores were a bit higher – would you recommend that I sign up for the next SAT and try to improve a bit? The 35 Reading score on my most recent ACT has me convinced that I can boost my CR, and if I can get a 10 on the essay (I had an 8, plus a perfect multiple-choice score) then I feel like I could hit 2300. [Note: Bear in mind that I’m a busy guy and don’t have much free time to study, especially with application deadlines piled on top of everything.]

@Ill - Aye, that’s the truth of it. So, are you saying I’d have a better or worse percent chance than the average applicant (Penn’s 13%, Yale’s 7%)?

(Also, I’m not looking for a match in the sense of what college would best fit my interests/needs/personality, I’m looking for a match in the sense of a place where my stats, extracurriculars, and the like would be “average” for the school’s applicants – if that makes any sense.)

If you feel like you can score better than last time, yes I would take it again

Could you chance me also? I posted a thread a couple of hours ago

I did (I just had to take a bit of time to do some research first). :)

Great stats, but your ECs are a little lackluster. I think you have a shot at these schools if you write really great essays, have a flawless interview, and have awesome, unique rec letters. Really concentrate on those things, as it’s really the only thing you can control at this point. Good luck!
