Chance at UC Berkeley?

GPA: 3.6 freshman year (1 c+) , 4.29 sophomore year, 5.00 junior year, (out of 5 for AP courses) UC GPA: 4.62

SAT: 2300
Total: 4.35
EC: Dance team (9-12), Editor in Chief of school newspaper,

Major awards: Siemens semifinalist, local science fair winner, invited to INTEL ISEF

My freshman year GPA was bad, and I am scared that will effect my chance at ivy leagues. Also chance me at the ivy leagues, and UCLA

Ethnicity: Asian

UC GPA is capped with 8 honors points, so you cannot have a UC GPA of 4.62. I suggest you recalculate. Also what are your test scores?

UC Berkeley and UCLA look at uncapped too…

Yes, but all published GPA’s are usually based on the UC GPA capped along except for the common dataset that uses unweighted. Test scores?

800 CHEM, 800 Math 2, 800 Spanish

What’s your uw GPA?

I’m guessing you’re a science buff. Don’t enter undeclared. In your statement of purpose, tell the admissions committee that you are interested in majoring in X. A stronger statement would include something like “I am interested in [area related to my Siemens project] and would like to work with professor ABC in the department of X since he is conducting research on the same/similar topic.” The committee has plenty of superstars that don’t know what they want to do. Show them you’ve settled on a major, are interested in research, want to work with a specific professor or group, and want to pursue graduate studies (if this is your interest).

UC doesn’t want people to hang around for 6 years guessing what they want to do. If you show them you can make steady progress, finish in four years, and do research (since UCB is a research university), this will help your chances.

Do you have any other EC’s besides the ones mentioned? They’re a little light.

You have a shot at top schools, yes. The upward trend in GPA is nice, and of course your science fair awards are strong. But you need to write fantastic essays and make yourself stand out.
