Chance at UCs

I’m currently a junior in a public highschool in California. Because of personal reasons, I received terrible grades in my freshmen year, and I am now afraid of my chances to get into a UC.

Weighted GPA- 4.129

The APs I’ve taken so far are stats and English language, I plan on taking Calc, Lit, and Econ next year. I also plan on taking sociology and physiology at my local community college.

Extracurricular-
3 years of varsity swim (plan on swimming my senior year as well)

2 years of journalism, along with being Editor in Chief

Lots of volunteer work done through 2 years of key club

Currently in Glee Club, Go MAD, poetry club, sewing club, and 2 others that my friends have started

I’m also in a mentoring program that’s a bit hard to explain but I basically visit my mentor, who is a well respected, award winning journalist, twice a month and do other things with the program.

If this counts for anything- I was born in Syria and am fluent in Arabic

I haven’t decided on a major, but any clue to what my chances would be?

If you do well on the SAT/ACT - you are in good shape for most of them.

UC’s only look at your Sophomore and Junior Year grades so your freshman grades should not be too much of a problem. Like NCalRent stated, do well on the SAT/ACT, at least 2000+ or 30+. Good Luck.

Frosh year grades are not included in the main UC admissions GPA, although they will be visible to admissions readers. D or F grades in frosh year can disqualify courses from being counted toward fulfilling a-g course requirements.

Fluency in Arabic, if proven by school transcripts or documents for two years of schooling at sixth grade or higher primarily in Arabic, by a university Arabic language placement test, or by a high school principal with guidance from Arabic language teachers or organizations, can fulfill the language other than English requirement for admission: http://www.ucop.edu/agguide/a-g-requirements/e-language/index.html

Placement in a high enough level of Arabic language courses can also fulfill college graduation requirements for a language other than English (these depend on the campus and division).
