Chance for an undergrad student in Cuba to get accepted for MS program

Hi, I’m a Vietnamese student who was given a scholarship to study in Cuba by my government. I’m thinking of applying to the US for Master Degree in Computer Science, specialized in Artificial Intelligence & Neural Network. I wonder if my chance is lower comparing to normal US students or other country international students.

Here’s my brief resume:
GPA: 3.68
GRE: has not taken yet but think that I could get fairy well.
Research Experience: 1 academic year in researching Network Security & Data Mining, developed an expert system using AI to detect attacks.
1 academic year in Uni’s Pattern Recognition Research program working with 1 professor, has some technical reports for the university, 2 local publications, possibly will get an International publication next spring on Pattern recognition applied in Medical research & X-ray.

Working experience: I have started my own start-up with 6 members working part time as freelancer programmers with me as the team leader. Mostly working on web development.

I’m thinking of applying to MIT, Cornell, Standford, Berkeley, UCLA.

I wish to know if I have chance at all.

Thanks

Best regards

cuban students have been able to enroll at the top universities in the US, though usually with more than a little bit of a bureaucratic nightmare. it’s possible, though, that’s for sure. since you’re a vietnamese citizen (i’m assuming), the process for admissions for you would be the same as for any other international student. you get a little less hassle than a cuban citizen would endure.

la universidad de la habana is very highly recognized internationally. if that’s where you’re coming from, you’ll be in a fine position. if you’re coming out of a smaller cuban school, then you’ll have the same issues that any other international student coming from a small school will have, which is less prestige.

coming from a cuban school will not hurt your chances at the schools you’ve mentioned. i can’t tell you if your GPA or profile is good enough for such top schools, however, because this is way outside my field. you’ll definitely want to apply to some lower ranked schools, just as a backup.

Thanks StrangeLight for replying my post.

I came from Institute of Polytechnic of Havana, also known as ISPJAE or CUJAE which is considered the best engineering school in Cuba (while Universidad de La Habana is more credited for their social studies)

Thanks for your advices, I definitely will apply for some lower ranked school too just in case.
