Chance for cornell Communications major?

I am a high school Senior and i am going to be applying early acceptance to cornell. my freshman year my brother had cancer and i had a 2.0 GPA, my sophomore year i took 8 classes and had a 3.8 GPA. i played varsity tennis and i won best math, history, science, and english student, as well as a tri-county biology presentation contest, and i got to meet a local state rep. I also began a “hit” comedy show on my schools bulletin which i recieved much teacher/student praise for (ive been doing it ever since). my Junior year i got a 3.85 gpa unweighted and a 4.3 weighted, and became a safe school ambassador (a bullying-preventing student) as well as a volunteer at an AIDS food bank and a trained teen-clinic volunteer. i ran varsity cross country and did another year of varsity tennis. I won most fluent spanish student, best history student, and best physics student. that summer i went on a humanitarian mission to africa with a close friend and it was amazing, i also took spanish 3 and pre-calc over summer. now my senior year i am the student body president and have a 4.5 GPA, and am still doing all of the things mentioned above. by the way i should mention i go to a backwoods school on the west coast, am white, and am fairly poor. its not like im in poverty, im just not rich by any standard. what are my chances for early acceptance to cornell if i want to be a communications major and a theatre minor? i have an SAT of 2120 and got mostly 4s and 5s on my APs

I’d say you have a chance. Make sure to apply EA or ED though (whatever they offer).

yea im pretty sure ill be applying ED

What’s your cumulative unweighted GPA? Looking at everything holistically, I think you have a very, very good chance. You say my ec’s are impressive–yours are phenomenal. I don’t know how you balance all of that! It will be imperative for you to explain your situation regarding your brother your freshman year; maybe write your common app essay about it? It could be very powerful. It’s also really important for you to stress all of your EC’s–they’re amazing, so milk them all you can (without sounding self-richeous). Your SAT is above the mean for Cornell, which is definitely good. How many students are in your school/do you have a rank? With solid recommendations, essays, and a well-executed app, I would say that you’re in ED 75%, IMO. Best of luck!

thank you so much! im not sure what my cumulative unweighted gpa is, hmmm. averaging them would i guess give me… a 3.4 (thank you freshmen year). im pretty sure based on grades solely im in my schools top 3%. we have a graduating class of about 140-150 and i think i might be in the top three students. i know i’m in the top 10% so i’m gonna be a scholastic honors grad.

oh, and i honestly have no idea how cornell and other colleges will react to this, but i do standup and want to be a comedy writer (the first head writer of late night with conan went there so i assume Cornell will be understanding at least)

Hey there I think you have a good chance at communications-your EC’s are definitely very good. I agree with the other people about applying ED. Want to chance me at Cornell RD? http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/what-my-chances/1218845-chance-cornell-cas-hopeful.html

thanks abunch!

Very Impressive EC’s and Im sure you’ll be a competitive candidate for communications. Good Luck!
