chance for electrical engineering, Pratt

Just got my SATs back and I got an 1860 my girst time around. Now I have 4 months ahead of me to actually study and retake in October. Im applying for electrical engineering at Pratt. SAT Chem: 650 SAT Math II: 660…will a 4 or 5 on the AP Exam offset my bad Chem score? I am retaking Math II in November!

Awards/Nominations:
Tied with another student for the highest score on the Chemistry Olympiad in my school. Nominated for the departmental award for AP Chem, it was between myself and the same student I tied with and he ended up winning.
Placed second in the county wide high school tennis tournament last year and 3rd in the Section tournament. Qualified for the Empire State Games in 7ththe grade. I will compete for Haiti next summer in Junior tennis competition even though I was born here.

Rec: i will get my recs from my chem teacher who I had two years in a row and formed a close relationship with. Also from my pre calc teacher who saw my improveme t through out the year.
Other: I attend school in the inner city in the town with the highest murder rate in New York, Newburgh. I will mention this in some of my essays.
Ethnicity: My parents are Haitian immigrants but I was born here so Im black. But my brother is competing for Haiti in the Olympics and I am.competing for them next year in a junior tennis competition

Thank you to whoever takes the time to read it. Chances and advice will surely help. 'Preciate it and God Bless!

Unfortunately, I don’t think 1860 is going to cut it at Pratt. However, I would still encourage you to apply after raising your SAT scores significantly. Applying ED will further your cause, and being a URM never hurt anybody so keep your fingers crossed. I wish you the best of luck.

I actually think you have a good chance because of your strong grades and impressive background.

Little to no chance at all. Very weak SAT/SAT II scores. Weak grades. Average EC. Your brother competing in the Olympics has nothing to do with you.

Based on your posting history, you would be rejected all your reach schools for Engineering (which has the highest testing scores at any school). You need to reach 2000 on SAT and a solid 750+ on SAT I Math or SAT II Math (ideally a 2100 to break the 25th percentile score + URM might get you in)

Actually it does, I was able to reach the Haitian Federation for me to get on the junior tennis team. I plan on raising my scores for SATs and SAT II’s, but this is all I have so I put it. I’ve seen several cases of Africans getting in with 1900’s(my cousin got in with an 183018 last year). I will try to raise it as much as possible, I appreciate the opinions/advice

Also, I never said which schools were my reach schools…any more advice/opinions?

And thank you @happyman2 and colorado13

I think that you have a good shot, if as previously mentioned before, raise sat score to a 2000+. Solidify your ECs, really go deep, tie everything together. Combined with new SAT score, and if you want you can retake SAT2s in Nov, they usually get there in time for ED. So combined with ECs, new SAT and SAT2 and URM- I think you have a good shot! Keep up the awesome work and good luck! Hope to see you at Duke in 2013!

OP, definitely don’t be disillusioned by our comments. We are only trying to be as objective as possible. I am sure you will stand a good chance if you really strive to improve your SATs.

Yea thats my goal this summer, work as hard as possible to raise my scores on the SAT and SAT IIs. And when you say solidify, should I run foe positions in math and science clubs?

Study hard! Take the ACT in September too. Then the SAT in October. And if you think you did well, apply ED. Its so hard to get into and ED helps. But if you don’t have good scores (I’d recommend like 2100+ish, some have goten in ED with high 1900s so its up to you), I’d keep on taking the SAT/ACT until you get a good score, even if it means every month!

If you send an ACT- SAT IIs aren’t mandatory btw

Yea but how should I approach it? Should I study simultaneously, won’t studying for ACT retract from the SAT or should I just take the SAT with less preparation because for the SAT I really want to study everyday for a lot of hours with all my attention focused on it so I can get the best possible score

Well… I have the same issue. I am studying for the ACT, its Sept 7. Then taking the next month to study for SAT, its Oct 6. I am banking more on the ACT, but then again, ya never know…

They really overlap. There are some free questions from ACTstudent.org do those and then do your SAT book or whatever. If you really want to get into a top college, you’ll find time.

ight, thanks I wasnt sure how closely related the questions were, but I’ll give it a shot. @SouthernBelleEM why dont you take the ACT in November or December or are you applying Early Decision because Im considering that option as well

I think she’s applying early but I could be confusing people.

As far as ED goes, I highly recommend it of you want to go to Duke. It really does help. Just work on your scores and then look st your options and talk it over with your parents, but the good news is that if they don’t give you the necessary FA (although top schools like Duke give out pretty good FA) you can back out.

yea Im definitely gonna do Early decision at either UPenn, Cornell or Duke but Ive got visit Cornell and UPenn before I decide

and Im definitely going to work on the SATs this summer…any more advice/opinions?

Only that Duke > UPenn and Cornell haha. Duke and Cornell are both solid at engineering, UPenn isn’t really known for it as much (Wharton is their top school- business) but all 3 are great schools

haha at least I know you guys have pride in Duke. Yea thats what I’ve been hearing about Penn but I also want to got here for the networking and opportunities in case I pursue other areas after my bachelor’s. Sort of a well rounded education. I’ve still got more research to do though
