Chance for MIT, Cornell, Duke, Carnegie Mellon, Northwestern

For my son:

GPA: 3.94U/3.58W
Class Rank: 1 out of 637 (public high school)
SAT: 800M, 800V, 700W
SAT2: Math 2: 790; Physics: 750
APs: 21 total (5s and 4s in several subjects)
ECs: National Honor Society (officer), literary magazine (editor), Mu Alpha Theta (President), Brain Bowl, debate
Volunteer: Sunday School teacher’s aid (4 years)
Other: White Male, not seeking financial aid, from Florida, legacy at MIT

Applying to engineering schools

MIT doesn’t consider legacy at all. His ECs are pretty light. Did he do anything with his summers?

He’s spent each Summer at an academic program at a University. Post-Freshman year at a program on business/entrepreneurship at Brandeis; post-Soph at a pre-med program at Wash U, post-Junior at an engineering program at Yale.

His scores are good, but does he have any safeties or matches? His ECs are a little light, but if he is passionate about them, it should go over well in his essays.

He’s also applying to Michigan, GaTech, RPI and Maryland.

GPA is on the low side, though his high number of AP classes (seriously, it is ridiculous) may offset that. Just make sure that he takes enough classes to show passion, but not too much as for him to get B’s and C’s (or worse). If he is a junior, then I would recommend him to ease off those classes. If he is a senior, I would suggest showing a lot of passion in his EC’s and summer experiences.

Overall though, mid reach due to GPA

I think OP had a typo and meant to write 4.58 W?

Sorry, did not see the typo in the weighted GPA XD
