I’d say you have a pretty good shot, but I would apply as early as possible just to make sure. I would try to get that GPA up a little, too.

I can no longer insult individuals on here, so I will just do what others have done and give opinions of other schools in other forums. Why do you even want to go to Pitt? They aren’t a top 50 school. Your grades could get you into an actually competitive school. You should look at schools like Penn State- University Park, Ohio State, Illinois, Wisconsin, University of Maryland, Syracuse, Delaware, Villanova. You are more in line with all of these schools. Only a Pitt grad would tell you otherwise.

haha pitt’s a great school, its ranked just as high as all those schools listed above… penn state is a good school, but if you dont like country life, then its not a good school to go to… if you like city life pitt is a great schools to go to, with great programs ect.

It’s not really the country life. It doesn’t feel like it is out in the middle of nowhere. The town has almost 100,000 people when school is going on. We are the 3rd largest city in PA on football weekends. Pitt is a good school. You were close with your response, but Penn State is the great school between the two. Pitt has good areas, but overall it does not have the national reputation of Penn State. That’s just the simple truth. Just ask your friends around Iowa. If you want to be in a crowded and impersonal area, then Pitt is the place for you. If you want a college town with a lot of school pride, that’s safe, and that has great sports, then Penn State University Park is where to go. Pittsburgh really is not that big of a city. If you are dying for the city feel than maybe you should look at NYU, BU, BC, Villanova, and other schools in really large cities. Every school I listed before is above or equal to Pitt’s academic ranking on www.usnews.com (Pitt is #57). Iowa is only #64. You could get instate tuition and be at school in a power conference.

Penn State sounds similar to Texas A&M, ie, very highly ranked and very good at what they do, but out in the middle of nowhere and nothing to do when sports isn’t going on. My friends tell me their kids have to drive over to Austin on the weekends to have fun. I guess that works for some people and I know kids who love Texas A&M, but my D would have hated it. She’d much rather be in a big city where the fun is not defined as football. That’s why she looked at Rice (houston), U of Chicago (chicago, duh), Pitt, U of Miami (big city plus good football), and Tulane (big city in a weird situation). She loved U of C where sports is practically nonexistent. She loves that Pitt is across the street from the Carnegie Museums, and that there is a strong arts scene with the symphony and the ballet. She enjoys sports, and Pitt’s basketball team is terrific, but she would feel like she was being strangled to death in a place like University Park or College Station, Texas. Different people like different things.

btw - your link to US News is to the newpaper part. No college rankings there.

I agree, penn state and those others are probably a little better, but the difference between 47th and 57th isnt that great of a difference… each school has different strengths… and pitt isnt a very big city, but it still has alot of things to do there and its right next to one of the best schools in the nation, cmu

To each his own. Don’t dog the man out because he likes the place, and, unlike people on this site, doesn’t live or die by USNWR rankings.

*I added the blah’s.

Please stop respinding to jec, you’re only giving him what he wants.

My colleges that I’m applying to are University of Texas- Austin (I just visited today, and have instate tuition- it’s a wierd situation), U of Minnesota, and UConn too. It’s a wierd group of schools, but they are among the few that offer the major of Urban Studies.

try upenn it has urban studies

Mercymom, you have to click on the “rankings” button on the top right to see the rankings. There are really a ton of things to do in University Park. Perhaps she should take a visit on the weekend. I have been to Pitt and the nightlife at Penn State University Park seems much more suited for college students. Tennesse, the usnews rankings are important. That is why so many people on here use them as a tool to narrow down their college choices. Without the rankings, there would be people from Temple arguing that they had the upper hand academically on U Penn. Usnews provides an unbiased opinion on the strengths and weaknesses of schools and gives an overall ranking of the quality of academics you will receive. You may want to live more by it, rather than ignore it and end up somewhere with a terrible rep. DportIA, texas is an amazing school. Penn State University Park was the #2 party school in the country, but Texas was #1. They work hard and play hard there. My friends that go there LOVE it. Plus, they have that great hand hook em thing. I don’t know much about Minnesota, but they are in the big ten so they can’t be all bad.

Jec, you are one of the most immature people I’ve seen on CC.
Anyways, to the OP, I think you have a great shot at Pitt. I think you’ll get in :)

ok, I saw the rankings button. doesn’t matter. if you love city life you’re still not going to pick a place like Penn State. i mean, Texas A&M is in the top 10 of several different engineering fields, but there’s no way D would go to school at a place like that. most of her friends feel the same way. her roomate was from Ohio and her brother goes to Ohio State. the sister, well, the last place she wanted to be was Ohio State. D and her roomate both love Pitt.

Actually, I don’t even know where Ohio State is (rural or urban), I just know that the roomie’s brother goes there and the sister hates it. My D would never go to her sister’s school (a big SEC school). Her sister loves it. People are different and different people like different things.
