Hi, it is my first time updating post.
I’m international student going to apply some engineering schools for 2019 fall admission.
Schools i am going to apply are
Virginia tech, purdue, TAMU, pennstate, Iowa state, Ohio state, Ncsu, suny stonybrook and U of Florida.
My profile is…
Gpa-> 3.78/4.0 (all A since 11th grade)
Ap-> My school is really tiny international school in Asia so they do not provide Ap classes
Class rank-> 4~5/20. It is really tiny huh?
Sat-> 1360/1600 (math>740) Studying sat english alone for Asian nearly killed me…!!
Sat 2-> math2 630, chem 580… I did not study shameful
Ec-> acapella club leader, sports column club leader, science and technology club leader, 2 times class president, student president for a year, entered mock UN debate for World Food Program, school worship team leader, volunteer for new students from Africa and etc…
Essay, recommendation-> yes
Toefl->90
One thing I am worrying about is the number of my class. As you can see it is very small. It’s really hard to compete. For example, I got 97 out of 100 in physics but i was only top 15 percent… I learned all calculous, precal, algebra 2, biology, chemistry and physics.
Thank you for replying
P.s Also it would be better not to send my sat 2 score for admission right???
I think that the 90 on the TOEFL is not quite as high as would be ideal. You might want to spend some time working on your English and then retake it.
You can improve your English by taking classes. However, you can also improve your English by just using English as much as you can. Watch TV and movies in English. Read books and articles on the Internet in English. If you have the chance, you might want to see if you can take an English immersion program for a few weeks. If you have friends who are native English speakers, then sit down with them for a hour every few days and just talk in English and ask them to correct your grammar if they see anything that is not quite perfect. Practice is important.
Having all A’s for your 11th and 12 grades will help you quite a bit. The small school should not be a problem. I know some students who went to an equally small school and the top students all went to very good universities.
Yes, don’t send your sat subject scores, especially since none of the Universities on your list are especially interested in these, so that only top scorers submit them.
What sort for Engineering?
If it sounds interesting to you, rather than engineering through COE, at Penn State apply to Data Science or another IST major, or a major in Earth and Mineral Sciences. It’ll increase your odds.
I’d replace suny Stony Brook with SUNY Buffalo, UF with USF, and tOSU with Miami Ohio or Ohio U.
With these changes, you’re sure to get into a university.
Next: can you afford t see universities?
Thank you for the kind advices.
I want to apply for chemical engineering but can recommend some engineering related bright future majors? Also i can not understand your last question can you explain it? Thank you very much:)
First of all, thank you for your support.
I heard that Toefl does not matter if i get over minimum score and most of their minimum score is 80. Am i wrong? I am trying to have conversation with teachers and friends so i beleve that i can be better speaker soon!
:))
Your class size and GPA aren’t a problem, but your test scores are on the low side for engineering majors.
You seem to have quite a few state schools on your list. Those are less likely to offer you any financial aid. Can you afford to pay full price tuition?
Yes, as long as you get the required score on the TOEFL, youre good.
However for the SAT you need high scores.
Small private schools wouldn’t rank.
Instead, they would indicate what percentage students attend 4- year college (or equivalent: BS, etc) and how they score on national exams.
You mean all of the schools in the list?
I’m worried about the financial problem but first of all I want to know my chance for admission.
Also, then, can you recommend some good engineering schools that I can get financial aid with my score and gpa?
:))
Oh I got it!
Maybe I should worry about the money but now, I am just asking for my admission possibility.
You mean my sat score is low to get financial aid or just for admission?
Can you recommend some nice engineering schools that I can get financial aid with my profile?
I thought I can get one from Iowa State…
As stated above, your test scores are low for engineering, especially that math SAT II subject test. Your TOEFL score is going to matter. Many schools prefer to see 100+. I think the schools on your list are going to be a reach and as noted, states schools don’t tend to give much aid, even to OOS domestic students.
Yes Iowa State. Apply now. It is a very quick application. They let you know quickly also. I am just not sure about international aid vs state side aid but overall it is good.
Most of the schools I listed do not require SAT 2 score I heard.
I took SAT2 because just for some schools in Hong Kong.
My counselor and all teachers said that TOEFL score does not matter if it’s over the minimum…
Am I wrong?
I really go to Virginia Tech so i checked their engineering school freshman profile and their average SAT score was 1320-1340… Is my score not competitive?
Thank you
No, if they say they want 80, it doesn’t matter if you have 80, 83, 90… however it does attérée if you have 76 or even 79.
The problem is that these schools award scholarships to top 10% scorers for their applicant pool. So, 1400+, 1420+, 1450+…
At other schools, Admission depends on your financial need.
For example, UAlabama has generous scholarships. To have a full tuition scholarship you need 1420+.
Some universities on your list are going to be more selective than that.
You mean I still have possibility for admission but it’s hard to get any financial aid. Right? What about Iowa state univsesuty or University of buffalo? Can I get any aid from these schools with my profile?
Yes, you may have a chance of admission, but significant financial aid is extremely hard to find for international students. That is why posters ask how much you can afford. If you have $25,000+ a year to spend, we might be able to help you. If you have significantly less, you should probably look in your own country, and some posters might suggest Europe, where both tuition and health insurance are covered (you will have to pay for health insurance to study in the US).
Virginia Tech goes not give any financial aid to international students. SUNY Buffalo gives an average scholarship of $6,500 to it’s international students (not sure if it is based on merit or need), but note that the cost of attendance (tuition, room & board) for non-New York residents is $46,000 per year. And it looks like as an international student you must have an original bank statement showing $43,000+. That’s a tough hurdle for most Americans. Iowa State gives it’s international students an average of about $6,300 in merit aid, tuition alone is $14,000, and that doesn’t include room and board, books, fees, or any other expenses.
All you have to do to get this information for each school is to google the following: common data set. It’s much faster than waiting for a poster to do it for you. ;
Also, the published admission rate is for all the university as a whole. STEM majors are highly competitive, so the admissions rate is usually a bit lower. You need to get that SAT score up.
