Chance for UMD please

I am a senior in high school from New Jersey
4 year varsity lacrosse starter and captain senior year
national language honor society-LATIN
act=24
sat=1600
m/r=1080
gpa uw= 3.38
weighted=4.1

I don’t think it’s likely.

m/r=ouch. you took some tough courses, apparently, and I’d want to see how you were doing in math courses, particularly AP ones, and I’d also want to know your intended major and what about your resume says you’re a lousy standardized tester but a decent student who would survive the major.

Are you Division 1 caliber in lacrosse? Contact the lax coach via email.

amontesano,

Your GPA is right on target–congrats on that–UMD looks for a 4.11 weighted. As you already know, your test scores are on the low side…

You haven’t given a full picture of the rest of your “resume” with respect to other activities or community service, but certainly four years in the same sport with a leadership position in your senior year is awesome! Good for you! I think you have a good chance of getting “Freshman Connection” for Fall 2014. GOOD LUCK!

I am from MD and I think that UMD will be a reach for you. The lower 25% of admitted students had less than a 1260 combined m/r and the middle 50% had a 28-23 ACT. I don’t know what is expected from OOS, but instate we are told students should have a 3.85 unweighted average to expect the school to be a “match”.

That being said, there are many things to consider besides GPA and test scores. As cheermom said, you have a lot going for you and that may get you in. Good Luck!

OP has forgotten about his or her post.

I wish I was on the path to play a D1 sport but unfortunately im not. The major i would be going into is accounting and eventually looking to become a forensics accountant but speaking of test scores I only applied to umd once I heard a girl I know who got accepted and now attends umd with a 1400 sat combined

ah, there you are. accounting is pretty math intensive. what math courses have you completed and what were your grades? are there any AP math scores yet? what was your math score on the SAT and ACT?

The reason for my particular questions is that I’m looking for some reason that UMD would admit you. UMD is heavily focused on test scores. I’m hoping they’ll see the discrepancy between scores and GPA and look at your math grades. I don’t believe the 4.1 is relevant except as it correlates with high scores in rigorous math courses. Sorry.

As for the girl you mention, you know even less about her stats than we know about yours.

Math score on sat was 610 and act was 26, but my downfall is that I got screwed out of honors classes in highschool because your not aloud to move up from level 1 . I am currently getting straight A’s in pre calc and wont be taking the final because of that

Actually a 620 on the sat math sorry lol

The 620 and the A in precalc says you might if you work really really hard survive the math classes at UMD. The 460 CR remains a problem for your acceptance at UMD.

Bottom line: I would have told you before I started asking questions that it is highly unlikely that you would be admitted. I still feel it’s unlikely you will be accepted and you certainly should not count on it. Your Math score is at the bottom of the mid-50% for UMD math, that’s important, but your CR is way down in the bottom 25%. UMD just has too many students who are less risky, less likely not to survive first year.

Okay thank you. I will let you know once I recieve my letter by jan 31st.

Do not let anyone get you down you have no idea what they are thinking keep your head up and wait till the 31 nobody on here has a magic globe wait and see and then go from there (:
