Yes, and to clarify, while I said that Cornell is definitely not in an urban environment, Ithaca is a bustling little city with restaurants, coffee shops, bookstores, etc. From my perspective at least, it does NOT have a rural feel to it.
I loved my time at Cornell and yes, Ithaca is vibrant wonderful town, but it is in a rural surroundings, and more importantly, hard to get to, especially from CA.

Good point. Travel definitely needs to be addressed when someone lives 3000 miles away.
For the record, Ithaca does have an airport. There are no direct flights from California, but Ithaca can be reached by air from either San Francisco or LA with only one connecting flight. The other alternative is to take a direct flight to either Syracuse (about 60 miles away or Rochester (about 95 miles away).
