Wow! Is UT Austin affordable?

I’m not too sure. I did receive a pell grant of $7,395 according to FAFSA site. Though, I’m not sure what financial aid they’ll provide after viewing my FAFSA.

After you determine if that’s affordable, you can make a choice. If UT is your top school or your most affordable, then great.

Without UT, where will you go? Is that affordable?

Congrats on the change in status.

I’d say go for it. Assuming you have the confidence to do well. Doesn’t seem like they are asking much at all: three CS classes plus calculus.

Congrats on the conditional CS offer!

What is the screen shot from? Is this from UT’s page, or…?

In terms of costs, I prefer not to count indirect costs when comparing schools to one another, as they frequently use different formulae. So, this is what it looks like for UT.

  • UT: $24,994 direct costs for tuition, room & board - $19,395 in grants (including $7k institutional grant) = $5599.

Between a job and federal loans ($5500/year), I think that UT is a financially feasible option for you.

What does the financial picture look like at UTD? Are those the only schools left in consideration?

Just out of curiosity, wouldn’t you say the ROI to be much higher at Austin than Dallas?

The screenshot of the ATP offer was from text. I haven’t received an email though like others which is weird.

If you mean the pricing, that was from the UT Austin Net Price Calculator by MeadowFi.

UTD I would only pay for housing which is around 8k a year plus some other things as well that isn’t tuition ASSUMING I get Comet Promise, but they haven’t reached out to me on that matter yet. I actually emailed them today about it. UTD is my only other option.

Can you clarify by emailing (not texting) Ms Achilles

  • where you’d be in your 1st year
  • what the grade requirements are for these 3 CS courses and Calculus class, whether they would be done over 2 semesters
  • if there are additional scholarships since as a FGLI student you’re currently a bit short for UT

I will ask her about the last 2 bullets, but for the first year, I’d be attending UT Austin as a Liberal Arts, undecided major. However, I’d be taking 3 CS related courses as if I was already a CS major freshman.

For the grade requirements, I know that I need to pass the classes (probably) and maintain a 2.0 GPA. Here is some more information provided by the subreddit: Reddit - Dive into anything

Texas Advance Commitment - University of Texas Admissions.

Is this basically the same as Comet Promise at UT Dallas? From what I’m reading, if my family income is <$65,000, which it is since my parents are divorced, tuition is paid for.

Yes, looks just like Comet Promise.
The problem is the cost of housing&food. Would you be able to afford it?

Well, for one thing, ROI depends on the cost one is going to pay. Until comparing apples to apples (direct cost at UTD vs. direct at UT), an ROI statement is pretty pointless. Additionally, I’m not a big fan of thinking of college in terms of ROI.

That said, I believe that UT-Dallas and its CS programs are respected, but this is not my area of expertise. Perhaps @DadOfJerseyGirl might have more to say on the topic.

With a job, most likely.

Assuming this is true, I think it’s feasible.

I know you were looking for additional outside scholarships, but have you looked/gotten a job already?

Then, this is a really good offer :tada:
(you could see if you could work in IT on campus! Win-win: pays well+adds experience  ) And in the meantine, do you know whst places are hiring with $15 an hour offers around where you live?

Although a C- doesn’t seem like a big deal, don’t underestimate the challenge and hit the ground running (office hours as early as the 1st week to introduce yourself to professors and ask questions about sth that you aren’t sure you ubderstood correctly or find fascinating, tutors to go from B to A, etc. ) :muscle::raised_hands:

I can look around for some jobs that pay that much. Might not be many though of course.
