If you want open curriculum, check schools like Rochester, Grinnell, and Kalamazoo for safety with big merit. They’re not all New England but even is your list. Wesleyan might be another. For writing look at Sewanee - and for big, in addition to UMD, Iowa….one if the top writing schools and has your other interests.
