Cost Constraints / Budget

Schools

Safety: U of Alabama, IUB, Ohio State (EA, already accepted to all)
Likely: UC Riverside, Cal Poly SLO, San Diego State
Match: University of Georgia, UC San Diego, Boston University
Reach/Super Reach: Georgia Tech, UNC (oos), Tulane, Emory, Northeastern, UChicago, UCLA, UC Berkeley, UC Irvine, Penn, Cornell, Dartmouth, NYU, UMich

Scholarships and financial aid preferred, trying to keep costs under 40k, but if the school is T10-T20, parents are willing to pay full cost if necessary

Note because I can’t edit: School only had 1 AP available sophomore year (music theory), 0 freshman year, took honors classes every year

Congrats. Culverhouse is in the bag and is at budget. Underrated. OSU fisher and Kelley are both great Will be over but solid.

You are already in good shape.

What is the goal career wise ?

Excluding the ca schools, you are labeled right with in my mind, only UGA possible. And it’s not direct admit.

Your first three are fantabulous. I U gets you the rank you want which is fine - dependent on your career goal. It may not be necessary. And while over $40k, it’s not $90k !!

Congrats and good luck.

Agree with UC Riverside as a likely - SLO and SDSU are not, imo. Maybe matches, maybe even low reaches (depends on major a bit). But if you’re good where you’ve already been accepted, it really doesn’t matter one bit. You’re already set - the rest will be icing on the cake.

The DECA awards should help, but your GPA is low for the top schools as is your SAT for those schools that accept scores. Not sure if DECA will help you overcome that…But again, if you’re happy with your safeties, then you’re already in a great position.

Does your family qualify for need based financial aid? If you say your family is willing (and presumably able) to pay full cost that suggests you don’t qualify for need based aid.
And most of your reach schools won’t give you a scholarship.

If your family will only pay full cost for “T10-20” then why do you have Northeastern, Boston, Emory and Tulane on your list?

Unfortunately, most of the reaches on your list are probably out of reach, but give it a shot.

You already have some good acceptances in hand, so you’re already set. Congratulations!

Are IUB and tOSU under your $40k limit? If not, then they are not safeties.

Congrats on your accomplishments!

While you have a solid academic record, your EC’s stand out more than your stats, so I think more “holistic” schools will go better for you than ones that are very stats-driven. Most of your reaches/super reaches are going to be pretty long shots, I think. (Also, GT wouldn’t be in budget anyway. Hopefully you’ve run net price calculators on the ones where you’d get need-based aid?)

I don’t think UCSD is a match - more of a reach/low-reach. Also, no undergrad business school - Riverside would be better for this anyway. I think you’ll get into UCR, and I think that will set the bar for assessing your other acceptances in terms of value vs. cost. SLO and SDSU have gotten surprisingly competitive; I don’t think they are slam-dunks but fingers crossed, as both would be great options to have.

Have you considered U of Denver? They have an excellent business school, and their Pioneer Leadership cohort program seems like a great fit for your strengths and could be the kind of experience you would like. Not sure if it would be in budget or not, but need-based aid and merit are both possible, so it might work. Still plenty of time to apply if it looks interesting: Home | PLP Leadership Studies Program | Academic Affairs

The Business Leadership Program at U of Puget Sound is another cohort honors program that could be worth a look. Again, potential for both merit and need-based aid to get you to budget. More About the Business Leadership Program | University of Puget Sound

Did you consider Babson? It would be another reach, with a <25% acceptance rate, but it’s more holistic and focused on entrepreneurial potential, with median stats that are pretty close to yours (your SAT is above their median but GPA a little below). Fantastic school for a business-focused student - top-notch reputation, and they meet need. (Again, run the NPC.) No. 1 Again: What Babson’s Latest Rankings Mean for the College · Babson Thought & Action

(FWIW, Babson and Puget Sound both have D3 tennis, if you’re at a level to be interested in walking on. Did you have that in mind at all, for the few D3 schools already on your list?)

You have some nice acceptances already, if they’re affordable, and Riverside should be a yes and definitely in budget, with great business programs… so everything else is gravy, and you only need to consider additional applications if you like them better than those. Good luck!

@Gumbymom should weigh in on the CA publics.

Pretty sure SLO, SDSU are not in the Likely category.
And I don’t think UCSD is in the Match category.

Thank you so much for such a detailed reply, I appreciate it! I’m actually considering Babson so I’ll keep it in mind for sure. As for GT, UNC, Emory, etc. I messed up when I said T20, I think any very good business schools such as those three mentioned I may be okay paying full price if I have a discussion with my parents, so right now I’m just applying.

No! Talk to them now to get a budget, not later. There’s no point wasting time, money and effort applying to schools you can’t afford.

Thank you, I’ve had many discussions with them and we’ve agreed on 40k but they’ve consolidated that we may pay more if the school is a much better fit for me than others. I’m keeping $$ in mind and it will factor into what I choose but it’s not a deciding factor whether I should apply or not.

You need to calculate your 3 UC GPA’s along with your SLO GPA.

UC GPA calculator: GPA Calculator for the University of California – RogerHub

SLO GPA is 9-11th grades for the a-g courses with an 8 semester Honors point cap so if you have not taken any college/DE courses than use the UC GPA calculator, add in your 9th grades and then your SLO GPA = UC capped weighted GPA.

For SDSU, what is your CSU GPA calculated on your application?
SDSU average admitted GPA was 4.04 Capped weighted. I would put SDSU closer to a Target School and not a Likely.

Cal Poly SLO’s College of Business admitted SLO GPA range was 4.08-4.25. Economics had a 19% estimated admit rate and Business Admin 23%. SLO is probably a High Target.

Economics Admit rates 2022-23 for the UC’s.

UC Berkeley: 5.3% High Demand major- REACH

UC Irvine: 17.5% Econ/10.8% Business Econ and 8.8% for Business Admin- LOW REACH/REACH

UCLA: No admit by major but by College: Economics 11%- REACH

UCSD: <25% Economics- HIGH TARGET/LOW REACH

Good luck and the UC’s and even SDSU tend to be unpredictable. You already have several acceptances so you are in good shape.

SDSU is only unpredictable because it (unlike some other CSUs like SJSU, CPP, CSUN, etc.) does not want to be transparent about prior year admission thresholds for each major.

Do you mean better fit or higher ranked ?
Ranking does not necessarily equal better outcome.

What is the ultimate goal here ? Do you have a major or career in mind ?
