BME at Gatech is linked to Emory only at PhD level. Bachelor and Masters are not linked. I have DD who is senior in BME at Tech.
Stamps⦠so you understandā¦
I do not know exact numbers but if I remember correctly there are only about 50 Stamps finalists. Out of them about 20 are OOS.(People do not realize that Stamps goes to instate students too!) Given caliber of OOS students at Gatech⦠your chances for Stamps⦠close to 0. STAMPS is used to get MIT and Ivy level students who went to the moon and back to stay in Tech.
Good to know on the Emory connection, they are a bit misleading in describing it then.
Well there is a shuttle between Emory and GaTech. Students theoretically probably can work in some labs at Emory (but anyone can). But there is nothing bult in into BS program (no classes, no internships, no professors, not even touring).
There is obviously collaborative research between GaTech and Emory in BME area at some level.
Iām very realistic about something like Stamps at a place like Tech. Like I said itās a super longshot. Would depend on how much they like his story (T1D kid who wants to Design Med Devices and has a background showing an aptitude). Iāve read through some of the winners and it seems to be less about academics and more about something compelling about the candidate, no one is getting in to Tech OOS without outstanding Academics.
Still GT is like trying to stand out as a diamond among diamonds. Itās starting to be viewed as right behind MIT in terms of the best Engineering focused school in the country and it is getting applicants in line with that. I have no illusions but until the answer is no might as well try. All you can do is put together your best app and let the chips fall in the end. Heās be perfectly happy at A&M doing BME even if he doesnāt get any significant merit.
Iād be interested in your thoughts on BME at Tech though and how it lives up to the hype if you donāt mind sharing. Not super excited about paying OOS or being in the middle of Atlanta but the Engineering Dept and resources look pretty great for stuff like Robotics, Labs, and the Clubs like GT Motorsports.
I am not going to share much publicly. We are full pay milking cows :). Would I do it again, hard to say.
It is more in line with what @tsbna44 said. If your kid is go getta he will be successful everywhere, if not⦠GaTech is full of brilliant kids. We learned that it is not easy to succeed at the tipy top school but it was always like that at Tech. Given problems with market now, I know it is not easy to land jobs.
BTW I myself have 2 degrees from GaTech. In our family (full of GaTech graduates in different fields) attitude to Tech that it does not open or close doors. Everything is up to an individual. All also depends on location where you will live after graduation.
We have very successful (male with PhD), average and stay at home moms in the family. Success is also relative. For some carrier is more important than family. For others it is not. None of us are starving :), but we all graduated without loans. I have sample of 6 in immediate family and unlimited sample among friends and classmates
.
Thatās good perspective, thank you. As I mentioned earlier I do Engineering Recruiting but not for BME. We look at GT pretty much as the same tier as Carnegie Mellon and it will cause an extra glance. That said I have always told kids that a 2.7 with 2 good internships gets hired over a 3.7 with no internships virtually every time. Companies like to see hustle and they hate entitlement. You have to distinguish yourself and be willing to work and prove yourself.
For me I grew up in a big A&M family and while it was always where I knew I would go I was definitely pushed hard that way and never really looked around. For my sons I wanted to make sure they saw what is out there and then make their choice based on what options they can have. Completely agree with you that it is what you make of it. The negative for a place like Tech is even though they have a lot of great resources and opportunity you are also competing with all exceptional kids for those opportunities.
Life has no easy buttons!
Speaking of CMU. DD was accepted. However, at the end we discovered 2 problems with CMU. 1. FA was only 5k. And we absolutely couldnāt justify such cost. 2. BME is add-on degree at CMU. You can get it only as a second Engineering major. Furthermore, acceptance letter explained that CE and some other engineering were off limit. Obviously, we were not interested.
CMU is a great school but it just doesnāt make sense for mine either. He has zero interest in Pittsburgh. Itās really expensive with no real hope of FA. Itās a great Engineering school but not really a BME specialty. If he can get in there he also would be able to get in at a lot of other great options that donāt have those issues.
