His athletic recruiting situation (in which he almost committed to a different school) slowed the whole thing down.
Is your kid a NMSF? If so, he can go to Alabama for free. They buy kids in. Or so Iāve heard.
No, he is not one.
Then the question becomes - if he has athletic opportunities like he might want - where did UF or UM or UT come in?
Iām assuming heās not committed to athletics if he gets into the right school but I often wonder, if someone is truly athletically desirous, should they not pursue that over school name? I imagine thatās four years - if they stick - of the most wonderful time of their lives. A non athlete at a Michigan or UF, etc. canāt get that back.
Just what I wonder - Iām not an athlete or athlete parent but I often wonder why a kid would give that up - just to go to school somewhere - if they truly want to be an athlete, and not just a club or intramural athlete.
Many students who might play D3 sports prioritize academics over playing their sport at the varsity level. Thatās how it should be IMO (as compared to D1 focused students, especially those targeting P5 schools.) So for example, if recruiting for a relatively high academic kid doesnāt work out, many may be unlikely to choose [insert a non-selective LAC/other D3/or even D2 where they could play their sport without being recruited] vs. going to an academicky school like Michigan or UF or Texas where they might be able to play club and/or intramurals.
This doesnāt answer your question, but curious as to why U Mass Amherst (Isenberg) was not included as a target/safety. The list varies quite a bit in terms of school scale/environment and geography. It must have been challenging to demonstrate āfitā for such a wide range of schools.
If Iām interpreting correctly, the OPās kid will play at MIT if accepted. If theyāre getting coach support there, that would be expected of them for all 4 years.
It isnāt unusual for athletic kids who are also seeking an acceptance at a school like MIT. Iām sure many MIT athletes are in that vein.
No good reason TBH. It is a good school, but if he has to go to one of his safer ones, he would prefer to get out of town, I guess.
The application process has been daunting. One advantage was he got nominated for Morehead Cain and that required him to write a bunch of essays that have been able to be repurposed. If a college had three essays he could always knock off one from that application. He also wrote his main essay over the summer. He definitely tailors, but generally he is positioned as non-profit entrepreneurial-type with lots of leadership and a stem-ish. business interest.
That was your comment about UMASS - so Pitt beats UMASS and itās one of his safer ones. Very Fair.
Iām not quite sure your tie in to Babson (I know there is one and you are the forum Champ) - but I wonder - letās say he got into MIT or Michigan, etc. but when I read the 2nd quote, it would seem to me a Babson would be spectacular, maybe over other names. And I wonder why - but I shouldnāt as the list is insanely long - why IU and itās Innovation Hub/Corporate Innovation didnāt make the cut (given UM and Texas did). Itād be similar rank heft with an easier admit is all so surprised Wisconsin made the cut over IU - in that sense. But there might be another reasonā¦.
But the list can only be so long. And itās long already ![]()
Yes, Babson is a great fit that is also within walking distance.
He applied to both IU and UW.
You are right - I missed it lower on the list even though I commented on it yesterday.
Does Babson have the same issue as UMASS (too close to home)?
Well heāll find out soon enough - but yeah heāll have choice - but I thought Kelley decisions were out (maybe not). If he missed deadlines at some schools for EA, that could impact, of course.
But maybe a few rejections will help because making a choice amongst 15 or 18 is never easy.
And if he gets the UNC scholarship - how incredible would that be!!!
it is the closest of all, but we are big fans.
How should we view the studentās athletic talent? Will he likely receive a ātipā at the schools? It sounds like the only place he is formally getting coach support is MIT, but is he good enough that he could play on the other teams, even if not a full recruit?
I think since he is not getting coach help at the other schools, he has no admissions advantage. He could potentially play at a few of these but his allegiance to MIT eliminated those options IMO.
Ok! I normally do not comment on Chance Meās because I donāt have any specialized knowledge. But since this is just for fun, I will make a few predictions at the schools where I have some level of familiarity.
-
MIT (Coach support) -going with accept due to coach support.
-
Harvard - reject
-
NYU (Stern) accept
-
Vanderbilt reject
-
Northeastern (Biz) accept
My 2 cents!
Amazing resume!
I would say in MA - even a mid-tier private has solid college counseling - in metro Boston even public school counselors are quite savvy (though far busier!)ā¦
