Best thing that ever happened to you - and it’s too much!!

Depressing today but would potentially strangle you financially, taking away choice for many many years. So you may not realize it today - but it’s a big help. Do you know how many doctors are regretful and beholden to loans?

Don’t forget today, many doctors are employees of companies (not their own bosses) - and with the insurance world likely to change, I’m not sure I’d count on future incomes to be as they are today.

Societally, you are correct. However, when I’m looking at the individual, I’m looking at their long term financial health - and it’s too much. We, as a society, may not be better off - but most carrying those loans, will be.

And it’s not off topic - students have to think that far out.

Maybe, but in the next 8 years who knows what any field future will be.

Who knows, my parents really want me to just go to Rutgers and let them figure out the rest.

$20K for undergrad, $65K total for the four years.

Then you have $35K more to play with for grad school but $135K more if it’s medical, law or whatever the government defines as professional

Not correct - because you can only borrow $65K for undergrad with a $20K max per year in Parent Plus loans.

Alright, but these rules don’t play into effect until July 1, 2026?

This goes back to…. can you pay for Rutgers?

You can only take out a total of about $27,000 in loans for 4 years. Your parents would have to take out the rest.

Can they pay this back if payments are due right away? I don’t know what the options are.

$100,000 in undergrad loans is too much. That is why I suggested a CC.

Yeah and Uni of Alabama is more expensive too (30 k per year)

Direct costs (today) for Bama are $50,458. You would get at least $28K off. So that $22,458. Of course, you have to travel there. Once you move out of the dorm, your costs could go down - my son’s did. Some will get more (you fill out the scholarship app) but with a 3.5 and 1420 (single score, not super), you’d get $28K. So not $30K - unless you are adding in non-direct costs.

Check out the McCullough Pre Med Scholars.

This still costs more than Rutgers.

UAH - $39,576 direct costs. You’d get either $19K or $22K off - depending on how they see your GPA.

Mississippi State, U New Mexico, U Memphis are others to look at.

W Carolina and S Illinois too.

C Michigan might be $20K ish after merit the first two years, $22K the last two.

You might look at the PA publics like Bloomsburg or E Stroudsburg.

The issue with any of these - while you get the dorm experience which I love, they are more expensive then Rutgers.

And you cannot afford any of them.

In some ways, looking at med school is premature - because most won’t make it anyway - but then if you’re straddled with $100K in loans, how will you pay them back?

btw - Residents don’t make near what you think - far below $100K (far below) based on published data. It will be based on location/specialty perhaps bu the NE is showing $72K.

Don’t forget, as costs are spiraling out of control, costs are likely to go up.

Exactly correct - CS grads are really struggling.

We may need less doctors later - obviously society needs more but if folks can’t get insurance, they won’t go.

And we are sort of headed that way - it’s too hard to know now but that’s what the current admin seems to want.

Things change…you have to be flexible.

and when do you start school?

That’s the max for government loans. There are also private loans which would depend on your family meeting whatever qualifications they set. That would be in addition to the government loans.

My advice is to start at a CC and then transfer to Rutgers…unless you get substantial merit elsewhere.

That’s before you start your undergraduate school, right?

yes i realize that now

Yep I understand, that most of these will be more than rutty, and my SAT and GPA isn’t enough for good aid at these schools.

I’ll stick with Rutgers honestly.

I think I said that before, no? Residents make around minimum wage or less.

I know costs are going up, but it’s worth it if you can actually become a doctor
