Yes but those are more selective NJ schools, I think TCNJ is pricier than Rutgers (I’ve had kids at both). Possibly Stockton, William Paterson, ramapo will be more generous (I believe the highest merit at Montclair is $4000).
Montclair- 45 mins
William Paterson- 45 mins- 1 hour
Ramapo: 1 hour
Stockton: 1 hour 40 min
Would you consider commuting to Hunter College, which is part of CUNY in NYC? OOS tuition would be under $20,000 a year.
I don’t think Med school in Pakistan is the best idea, for several reasons:
- you’ve followed an American curriculum: are you ready to take the entrance exams for med school in another country?
- your parents think Alabama’s too far but Pakistan would be ok?
- medical education would be VERY different
- you wouldn’t be able to start med school in the US without a US college degree and if you went but didn’t make it you’d lose any chance at freshman scholarships (the most generous)
- exams to qualify for US practice are very difficult if you haven’t attended med school in the US (or North America)
- culture shock: in addition to foregoing college to start med school right away, you’d do so in a different country and would have to deal with culture shock (living in a country day to day on your own would be very different from going there on vacation with your parents)
- current US policy instability and hostility towards Muslim-majority countries which you could get caught into
Right, but after merit maybe they’d come in under Rutgers even without dorming.
That actually may work. I know some people who did it. But they were not from Pakistan.
- The entrance exam is more like the SAT + physics and bio ( a little harder math, but I already have calc). I would have to study for that obviously.
- Yeah same question I posed, but its five years straight to the USMLE. Not like doing undergrad in Alabama and then trying for med school.
- It is, but people I know have done it. Most come here (look at APPNA (doctor association for basically pakistanis)) or go to the Middle East.
- No med school in the US
- Yes, I would have to study for it
- Yeah, this is the biggest reason that’s bothering me. Agree with you, i don’t even know the native language honestly (learning it though).
- Yeah, its not somewhere I would live for a month let alone 4 years. I’m a pakistani though so I don’t think anyone is going to target me.
I’ll run their NPCs
Thank you guys for the advice.
I got some notes on what you guys have suggested so I can show to counselor tommrow.
I will see what she says, and move from there.
Thanks again, I got some work to do, so I’ll answer any other questions tomorrow.
If you grew up in America, are an American and want to settle in America, that seems an unreasonable choice.
In the end, you’ll find success, medical or otherwise, if you bust tail - says the wanna be journalist and now sales guy.
Life takes a lot of turns - but you’ll figure it out.
Not sure what you’ll come away with. Your issue is budget and only budget. I bet if you’ll ask, you’ll find many more to cc than you realize. Good luck.
Learning language and be able to function properly, i.e. understand lectures and be able to write…. That is a huge gap.
If parents will pay for half of Rutgers, that’s about 10k. Add saving from his job at the pharmacy (hopefully can save $5,000 till August) and any Rutgers or local scholarships (not guaranteed but even if small worth applying to), plus some of the federal loans, and OP’s covered for Rutgers.
Local CC+honors program is the financial safety.
Then add other universities such as the ones you listed and provided links for, in case something falls through and in order to have more than one choice.
Then OP can try for any university where the NPC returns show costs similar to Rutgers (IF OPs parents will contribute the same amount, half of Rutgers, to any college).
This way, @kingo will have several good choices ![]()
I’m no expert on this, but I believe that English is the language of instruction at at least some Pakistani universities. This would, of course, be important to verify. And of course being conversant in Urdu would be helpful in many ways even if formal instruction were in English.
The unis teach in english hence why I’m considering it
If the south might being home sick, what would Pakistan bring ?
Presumably, you will be seeing patients during your medical school years if you go to Pakistan. It is highly likely that the patients will not all speak English.
Then it is sound approach. My DD education will cost close to 400k by the time of end medical school (undegrad + medical + room and board). With loan limit at 200k, family will have to pay another 200k.
Honestly I have no interest in going there, but if everything else fails, why not?
Talked with my counselor, she just recommended me some random private colleges, and suggested Rutgers.
Obv I don’t have the stats for good private schools that would give good aid.
Also reading through the thread @twogirls gave me, and just looking at other universities.
What random private universities - any specifc names?
