Maybe they need to sit down with you and your college counselor.
Interesting, I will do Stony Brook then.
Good luck. I hope they are open to a conversation and things work out for you.
I donât think SB is on the list. Geneseo is, Albany is, as well as some of the other smaller colleges. Take a look at Oswego.
Thank you, itâs not like theyâre not supportive, itâs just they donât know much.
Itâs their fault in that this could be a $400K expense or a $100K expense and they need to learn the hows and whys. That they didnât know - now youâll tell them and hopefully theyâll start to learn quickly.
If they think youâll spend $10K a year, then no reason to apply to Stony Brook - the room and board alone will cost more.
You can do for sake of doingâŠ.butâŠif thatâs truly the budget, itâs not an option.
Youâll have to apply to meets need schools that work for your budget (youâll have to run the NPCs on many) or more likely, whichever public you can commute to - or a local community college. Many successful kids do this btw - both the Junior College or local college route. Thereâs many good ones in NJ - Ramapo, Kean, Montclair, Stockton, Rowan, etc.
Your parents, not you but with your help, have to do the NPCs.
And be honest with the #s because the schools get documentation from you to prove it - tax returns, W2s, bank statements and more.

Yes, Stony Brook is not on the SUNY tuition match list, but Albany is, meaning that at Albany you will pay the same cost for tuition and fees as you would pay at Rutgers, your home state flagship university, instead of standard out-of-state tuition and fees. It makes SUNY Albany a bargain for out of state students. And yes, Geneseo, an absolutely beautiful campus, is also on the SUNY tuition match list. I should note that Geneseo has a very accessible merit scholarship program for out of state students, which, with your gpa, could bring total cost of attendance down as low as $26,600 for next year, which would be lower than tuition match. Geneseo is a very good school and a great bargain at that price. Oneonta and Cartland have similar scholarships for out of state students.
In addition to Albany and Geneseo, the following SUNY campuses are also on the flagship tuition match list:
Albany
Brockport
Buffalo State
Canton
Cobleskill
Cortland
Delhi
ESF
Farmingdale
Fredonia
Geneseo
Maritime
Morrisville
New Paltz
Old Westbury
Oneonta
Plattsburgh
Potsdam
Polytechnic Institute
I recommend using the NPC with your parents for schools such as Princeton, Tufts, Boston University, Brown, and Rice. If the NPC is not affordable I would drop those schools. They are also not realistic in terms of acceptance.
More to ask your GC: whether you are the RPI medallist for your school.
Also ask whether s/heâd be willing to meet with your parents to discuss college applications and costs.
You could apply to SUNY Buffalo and a few others - you need to pick those that have your major and are most likely to offer merit scholarships, meaning youâre in the top 25% applicants. SUNY Albany would be a better bet, financially, than Stony Brook.
Yes, they have an aligned med school!
Albany Medical College, a private med school only 3.5 miles from the SUNY Albany campus, has an early assurance program with SUNY-Albany.
SUNY Geneseo is under $30,000 a year for OOS and they have a BS/DO program (LECOM).
@Kingo have you looked into the LECOM BS DO programâŠyou must apply to LECOM and some of its partner schoolsâŠand you must be accepted to the partner school, AND LECOM. You get your undergrad degree at the partner school, and then go to LECOM for your D.O.
This has been suggested a few times.
Yes I am looking into this option currently
SUNY New Paltz and SUNY Old Westbury also have BS/DO programs. Both schools are part of the tuition match.
