Chance me and Match as a student from NJ [3.7 UW, 1420 SAT, biology or neuroscience]

Several of my kids took the ACT and SAT 3 times each, so sat for 6 tests. Scores went up, they did better in the ACT.

Both of my daughters took the SAT first and the ACT later. They scored higher on the ACT and felt it was easier.

Mine only took the ACT. The last turn got him $4k more automerit at his school. He took it 7 times total and went from a first round 28 to a last round 32, with a 34 super score.

One English, he went from a 31 to a 24. The tests are unpredictable - all have different levels of strength. Others he went up.

You’re not disappointing anyone. You thought about this and made the best choice for you.

Here is a link to 7 released SAT tests and 6 released PSAT tests. This is the printed version, not the online version, but they will still be helpful. And you can practice the PSAT as well as the SAT – it won’t hurt and may help.

So, what I learned when my kids were taking these tests was to print out the sample test and then make sure to take them as timed tests. If you don’t have time for the entire test, take each section timed. When the time ends, if you haven’t finished, mark where you were and keep going. Then when you review the test, you can see whether you need to work on learning the content or mastery/speed. If you are super strong on something – maybe equations in two variables – don’t spend time reviewing it. But do spend time on any question that you missed.

The SATs only test a certain number of concepts and there are only so many ways they can present those concepts, or else they wouldn’t be a standardized test. The more practice tests you do (including the PSAT) the more familiar with both the content and the presentation you will become.

Also, here is a link to the official test prep book published by College Board on Amazon. It not only has copies of released tests, but also has explanations of the answers. (I am not sure if the downloadable tests have explanations or not – it’s been several years since my kids took the tests and I just don’t remember). But for $23.99 this book will likely be very helpful. Note that this is the official version published by College Board. My recollection of other books – like the ones by Princeton Review, etc – are that the questions were either too easy or too difficult when compared to the actual test, so not nearly as helpful. I always recommend the official materials when prepping for the SAT and ACT. Also Khan Academy, which partners with College Board.

Will your parents purchase the book for you? Since it has official answer explanations, I am hoping it will be really helpful for you to study efficiently and boost your scores.

Could you clarify this. Are you saying his English went from a 31 down to a 24?

Yes. The test difficulty are inconsistent from exam to exam - so yes prepping can help but at the same time both the difficulty and maybe how the student testing is feeling are different too.

Thank goodness for superscoring. I think his highest was 32 or 33 on English but he had one he went down 7 points. The good news for @Kingo is there’s a worst case 1420 SS. If both sections on his next SAT are lower, there’s no harm. If one or both go up, great.

There’s multiple variables - test difficulty vs prior and student factors - tired, sick, having a good or bad day or whatever.

Yes most won’t rise or fall (like my son did) to that level but one never knows.

The good news is for both super score and non super score schools, the floor is set.

So prep and if you get a higher score, then great. If not, no big deal.

@Kingo how is it going this weekend? Are you able to take any timed practice tests to identify areas where targeted study can yield improvements?

Hi, its not going well unfortunately. Got a 1370 on practice test 4( regressed a bit) 680R&W and 690 Math

Definitely have to practice more on english and math constant problems. Not sure what my study plan for a week should be at this point lol.

You never know how the actual test will go. Some score higher than others. In that sense it’s random. Do your best. You have a 1420 floor so if you don’t do as well - no harm.

Ty, obv still studying regardless.

Told you to apply for Hail Mary scholarships.

W&L gives the Johnson to 40+ kids. It’s due by tomorrow. There’s an essay.

Troy has free tuition.

Providence has the Roddy.

Lafayette has free tuition.

And there’s many more.

If you are just to accept without trying, that will penalize you in life.

If you want something and there’s a possibility, even small, go for it !!

This is only the first of many situations in life where a can do attitude will help. Or yes, like will have struggles.

But if you’re satisfied as is and there’s nothing wrong with that, then you can hold steady.
