Chance me/any advice please!

Hey everyone, I am looking for some help on my chances to get into a few colleges. It’s kind of out of my comfort zone to post something like this but I have no older siblings/cousins who have applied to college + it’s been a while since my parents applied so they don’t really have much knowledge on the subject. Any help, advice, etc. appreciated. Don’t really know much about college admissions/financial aid so anyone who helps is the bomb.com.

Here’s some info:

ECs/Volunteer/Work: My only EC at school is National Honor Society where I was treasurer. Honestly, I did nothing as treasurer for the whole year but I was in fact the treasurer. Through my school and/or NHS, I have maybe 20 hours of volunteer tutoring as well as about 20 hours of odd jobs/opportunities volunteering. I do media for my church several times a month, racking up about 100 hours of volunteer hours through that each year and possibly around 30 more hours through other opportunities in my church. I have had 3 jobs. First as a sales associate at a local bookstore (hated it, quit). Next, a job as an after school teacher watching kindergarteners and first graders. I love doing it and I’m still working there during the school years. Lastly, a substitute summer camp counselor. As a sub, I don’t work much there.

I want to apply to medical school one day because I’m really passionate about the idea of helping people. I’ve seen lots of members of my family in hospitals (sometimes good - births - sometimes bad - strokes). I want to help people like doctors helped the people I care about. So I would do a premed track at the school I apply to. However, I don’t want to major in biology or biochem b/c should I not get into medical school, those are two majors I would absolutely hate to have. I don’t want to be a biologist/chemist; I specifically want to be a doctor. I love majors in cultural studies or humanities and social sciences. I would go towards that while doing premed track. I also want to minor in Spanish and become bilingual because I love speaking Spanish and Hispanic culture + major resume booster to be bilingual.

I know this was long; sorry but thanks to anybody who read it and leaves me some advice. Should I apply to NYU? What are my chances? Like I said, I’m basically lost on the whole college admissions process and just need any advice. Thanks!

If you are applying to CAS, I’d say you have a decent shot. But keep in mind to elaborate on your ECs a bit more

Judging from numbers alone, you have a good chance. Make sure to have good essays though.

Academically, pre-med life is disgustingly hard. I’m not pre-med myself (I study economics) but too often I’ve seen pre-med and bio friends burn out and switch to something else. I’m not saying you will, but do be prepared to make a lot of sacrifices. There will be times when your friends are out partying the entire weekend while you crunch out notes for that orgo exam.
I like that you’re trying to minor in Spanish instead of just focusing on a STEM-field completely, but if you plan to write about that on the essay, that alone isn’t enough. Specify why your passion in humanities and social sciences set you apart from the other pre-med hopefuls.

I’m sure most of this would apply even if you were to do pre-med somewhere else and not NYU. Either way, good luck!

That’s really helpful advice; thank you!
