Chance me at a glance

I was wondering if someone could at a glance chance me for admission to top-tier universities (i.e. top 15-20 in the nation)?

Here’s my academic/applicant profile:

  • 4.0 Unweighted GPA
  • Enrolled in full IB Diploma program; earned a 6 on IB SL Art exam (out of 7)
  • Earned 5's on all AP tests taken (5 of them) including European History and BC Calc
  • ACT 34 (superscored), SAT 1530 (also superscored)
  • Strong in History and English, as well as Bio; Math's a bit of a struggle but I work through it
  • Extracurriculars include president school Model UN club, president NHS chapter, news and opinion editor student newspaper, student gov't (assemblies officer)
  • No sports except a 9th grade cross country season
  • Personal interest clubs include Photography Club, Creative Writing Club and Tea Club
  • Service includes monthly sessions at soup kitchen; tutoring elementary kids; tutoring high schoolers for NHS; and interning at a summer camp to teach kids creative writing
  • Distinctions include Model UN Superior Delegate Award as well as position paper prize at state comp; leading school to take 2nd place two years in a row in state French Culture Bowl (trivia comp); NHS membership; American Legion School Award for demonstrated leadership and knowledge of current affairs; Future Problem Solvers state champion (as part of team) and 2nd place award for FPS Scenario Writing [ninth grade]; multiple awards from ninth grade graduation in almost every subject area I took (save science) as well as High Honor Roll
  • Didn't occur during high school but in second grade created a stop-motion video that made it to the nat'l level of competition for the Reflections Art Contest sponsored by the National PTA
  • Interested in history, political science and gov't with an emphasis on foreign affairs; also nuts about journalism and current affairs (really almost to a fault; I am a fiend for Google News)
  • In spare time I do photography, digital art and graphic design (I designed our school pride club's pins), and play jazz/classical piano
  • Loves academics and secretly wants to be a Renaissance man if possible
  • Middle-middle class suburban background

I’d be happy for anyone to give me an appraisal of my chances of admission given this info.

Do not mention any EC’s prior to HS. I think you need to specify which schools, too vague. Top15-20 in what Undergrad program?

You sound like you are at the right level to apply to these schools. It’s gonna come down to essays and interviews. Definitely go to as many interviews as you possibly can. Those will push you over the edge. Good luck!

I agree with the first two posters. You are definitely qualified, but you didn’t say which schools and programs you want to apply to. If you’re going to apply to the Ivies or other top-tier schools (which I’m assuming you will), you have to hit your interviews and essays out of the ballpark. Make the admissions committee realize that you are the right fit for their school. Additionally, I strongly recommend you apply to some state schools where you know you can definitely fit right in and maybe even get a full-ride.

One last thing, if I remember correctly, the ACT isn’t superscored in college applications. However, you should run by the application and see what their ACT score policy is.

I hope this helped and best of luck!

@JMS357 and @Gumbymom I am applying to Dartmouth, Stanford, Harvard, Columbia, UCLA, UCSD, UC Berkeley, and my state school, the University of Utah. I’ve been considering applying to ASU and Utah State University for extra safeties. My plan is to shoot for those higher ranked schools and if I miss then attend the UU honors college full ride.

I am currently am undecided in exactly which programs I want to apply to, though I am leaning towards a major in history, political science and government, or foreign affairs.

Are there financial constraints? Although you are a competitive and very qualified applicant, the UC’s (UCLA/UCB/UCSD) offer little to no financial aid (need-based or merit) for out of state students. You should expect to pay close to $60K/year to attend.

@godawgs123 you should post your query in the UGA forum

Or start a new thread in the “what are my chances” forum

@Gumbymom Yes there are. I do have some reservations about applying to those schools as such, but I’d rather have them as an option in case I don’t get into the more Ivy-ish schools.

@GoDawgs123 in case you haven’t checked it out here is a link from UGA with their profile of incoming freshman (GPA and SAT percentile ranges, percentage of admits and matriculants)

Looking at the info you gave it looks like you have a good shot of getting in. Are you going for the honors program?

Thank you. Yeah I’ll look into honors, but I know it is going to be competitive.
