Cross Country Runner 2 years, not that good,
Beta Club (summer before high school won 3rd place Science in my state)
Diploma de Espanol como Lengua Extranjera (DELE) Club
Deutsche Schule Spartanburg/International Center of the Upstate - language classes (German)
Tech Club (just member, but I also did some server work)
National Honor Society (again, just member)
Job/Work Experience: Summer art camp counselor (2 years - just for two weeks in the summer though)
Volunteer/Community Service:
200+ hours of various things: food banks, community events (easter events, art shows, etc.), community plays
Last year in Germany during refugee influx - worked extensively with refugees - Tuesdays private German language/law/custom lessons to refugee friend, Thursdays class of 15, and Saturdays participated in International Cafes for newcomers, also sat at a city council meeting as “youth” representative, attended meetings regularly with refugee help leaders on how to best handle the issue (at height we were receiving 13 refugees per week into the town, and we were a very small dorf) - this is probably the most important thing I’ve ever worked on and it meant a lot to me and I wrote about it extensively in my supplementals
Summer Activities: planned my own independent trip to Italy with friends ( 5 17-18 year olds alone for 11 days in a foreign country, could have gone terribly wrong, ended up being the best trip of my life), otherwise, I normally work or attend summer camps at Governor’s School during the summer
Essays (rating 1-10, details):
Common App: 8/10 - talked about my upbringing - loss of my parent’s native languages and having to relearn what I lost so I could communicate with my family - developed into a passion for languages
Supplements: Refugee experiences, teaching, learning about Levant/Central Asian cultures; documenting food insecurity experience; my interests/why International Business; range from 7-9/10
Teacher Recommendations (rating 1-10, details): First one - Dutch/Spanish teacher from Germany - 10/10 - she loved me and wrote about how in class I would shift between three to four languages (we had an exchange student from Ecuador, so I would translate German-English, or German-Spanish) also spoke how I was the best in her second year Dutch class w/o any previous experience while the rest of the class lived 15 min from the border of the Netherlands for their entire life.
Second one - Economics teacher - 6/10 - it’s hard to tell, he said he writes very few recommendations, only for the students that deserve it, and he agreed to do mine, but I’m not sure how passionately he wrote
Counselor Rec (rating 1-10, details):: ?/10 - I have no idea, I thought it would be generic because she asked everyone in the school to fill out this form for her so we could highlight our achievements for her, but then when I went to go turn mine in, she said she had already written mine? so that means she could write enough about me already, which I think is a good sign
Interview: only interview I’ve done so far is for the World Bachelor in Business program for USC, and it went less than favorably… I froze up completely on the first question (it was online and we had only a 1 minute and 30 seconds to answer) and I had to rush to finish what I had to say and then there were four seconds at the end where I just stared at the camera (i didn’t know I had to press space bar if I finished early lmao) my last answer was very strong, though, and I hope they see the development/professionalism changed from the first to the fourth question.
Other
Applied for Financial Aid?: would love to be considered for a merit-based scholarship (Trustee’s at USC anyone??)
State (if domestic applicant): South Carolina
School Type: Public Charter (attached to a community college)
Ethnicity: Mixed (White Hispanic - German/Puerto Rican)
Gender: Male
Income Bracket: High
Hooks (URM, first generation college, etc.): URM (?sort of), Fluent in German and English, proficient in Spanish and Dutch, learning Portuguese and Japanese - which all relate/aid my major, I got a refugee a job in Germany so that he could stay permanently (I did this for my own reasons not for college apps, but I think it shows some of my ethics/morals?)
Reflection
Strengths: Volunteer Exp, GPA, Teacher Rec, Life experiences
Weaknesses: INTERVIEW, ACT score isn’t great for merit-based scholarship… also not a ton of work experience
Where else you are applying or have already applied:
USC World Bachelor in Business, NYU Stern Business and the Political Economy, UPenn Huntsman program and Business Economics and Public Policy, Columbia and Sciences Po Dual BA
I’ve been accepted to University of South Carolina’s pre-International Business track, and will apply soon to their IBEA cohort track (would let me study in Germany, Singapore, and Brazil)
Basically, I would love to go to any of these schools and I think I would be a good match to all of them, were they to accept me, but my top choice would have to be USC’s World Bachelor in Business program (with trustee’s or presidential scholarship “goooaaaaaallllsss”). If you are applying to any of these please contact me! I’d love to talk to you and go through this process together!
