On October 31st, I submitted my early decision application to Duke University. However, the counselor I was assigned (who I believe was newly hired) failed to submit the letter of recommendation he promised to write me before the deadline. He apologized, gave me an excuse, and assured me that he would contact the university and submit the letter as soon as possible. Turns out, he just submitted it today. (deadline Nov. 1)

Will this affect my chances in any way?

In addition, I just got an email from an alumnus asking me if I wanted to schedule an interview with him. To be frank, I’m not too keen on having one since I feel like I’ll blow it. How much will the alumni interview effect my admission chances? Am I currently borderline?

A late counselor letter is not unusual. Don’t sweat it

I’m an alumni interviewer for Duke. They place little to no emphasis on the remarks we write up for our interviews. So they are truly optional. If you have the time, then go to the interview, they are low stress.

But skipping the interview won’t have any appreciable impact.

I see. Thank you very much.

The late counselor recommendation will not have an impact. They know things like that are out of your control.
