Chance me fellow members. Thanks.

Hello,

I am a second year transfer student enrolled in Moraine Valley Community College with a current GPA of 3.287. I plan on majoring in Biology w/Pre-Med track and for some of the universities, Speech Hearing Sciences w/Pre-Med track as well. I do have over 45 credit hours completed. After this semester InshAllah, my GPA will rise to a 3.509.
The reason for such a low GPA is that I got off to a rocky start in my first year and was struggling to find my element if you know what I mean. But I have discovered it and am pumped to excel.

E.C.'s:
-Student Ambassador (1800 were eligible and only fifteen were selected)
-Honors College (not an e.c. but just throwing it out there)
*There is a very good chance I will be graduating as an Honors Scholar from MVCC.
-Clinical Volunteering at a private clinic
-Volunteer at the local Mosque (may not matter to universities)
Future E.C.'s:
-Phi Theta Kappa (CC honors society)
-Pre-Medicine club

I may have missed a few E.C.'s

This may help with your response(s), but I am deaf (cochlear implants) and have a vision impairment (Bilateral Sensorineural Hearing Loss with Usher Syndrome, Type 1). I know I have a unique story to tell. It is my goal to attend a well-respected institution to help me gain the confidence I need. I’m not saying I do not have a good level of confidence, it’s just that more will help. Research and fellowship opportunities are important to me, and of course the academics matter because I want to be well prepared when I go on to obtain a very challenging, rewarding degree.

Some of the universities like University of Notre Dame are to you guys, very out of reach and I agree, but am just putting it out there. Help me narrow this list down and let me know what other universities should be added. Tell me which ones are very likely, have a shot at, reach…Oh and I am an Illinois resident, Thanks.

University of Illinois-Urbana Champaign
University of Iowa

Michigan State
University of Minnesota-Twin Cities
Purdue-West Lafayette
Penn State-University Park
Indiana University-Bloomington
Cornell University
Northwestern University
Tufts University
University of Alabama
University of Chicago
University of Michigan-Ann Arbor
University of Notre Dame
University of Pennsylvania
University of Rochester
University of Tampa
Valparaiso University
Vanderbilt University
Washington University in St. Louis

You are deaf and have a visual impairment? Without trying to sound too presumptuous, I don’t think any colleges will think you can become a doctor. Especially something like a surgeon.

University of Illinois-Urbana Champaign: shot at
University of Iowa: yes
Michigan State: yes
University of Minnesota-Twin Cities: shot at
Purdue-West Lafayette: yes
Penn State-University Park: shot at
Indiana University-Bloomington: yes
Cornell University: no
Northwestern University: no
Tufts University: no
University of Alabama: yes
University of Chicago: no
University of Michigan-Ann Arbor: maaaaybe
University of Notre Dame: no
University of Pennsylvania: no
University of Rochester: maybe
University of Tampa: yes
Valparaiso University: no idea
Vanderbilt University: no
Washington University in St. Louis: no

I really don’t know what the admissions will say, but your academics are WAY too off to get into these top schools, even with your conditions. And good luck getting into medical school with the grades, too. Top med schools only have about 2% acceptance rates among applicants with 3.9+ GPA’s

Good luck!

Thanks for the feedback! The Medical Schools care more about the Science GPA than College GPA, so I still have a lot of sciences to take before it improves. But, may I ask, what did you base your answers on? Thanks.

I think you’d have a good chance at the U of MN TC

What other schools with a well-respected Biology or Speech-Hearing Sciences program (both with pre-med track) should I add? Research and fellowship opportunities matter too.

Chance me! Thanks.

I have to second the fact that it would be extremely difficult to get into/go through med school while being deaf and visually impaired. OP, you might want to look up whether deaf/visually impaired people really have a high chance of getting into med school in the first place.

Also, with your GPA, some of these schools that you’re looking at are not feasible: Cornell, Northwestern, UChicago, Vanderbilt, Notre Dame, WUSTL, and UPenn, Tufts, especially, are not likely.

Thanks for the replies, give me suggestions on what schools to add.

Another thing, my hearing and vision both are not a problem. I hear extremely well with cochlear implants (Google it) and for my eyesight, it certainly is an obstacle in some ways, but there definitely are fields in Medicine that are obtainable. I understand why you are saying that it’d be difficult for a deaf and blind person to become a doctor, but that is without any medical aids like the cochlear implant. I did think about becoming a Biomedical Engineer, but I’ll stick to this plan.
