If you have the tennis coach or orchestra director particularly interested in having you at the school, you have a decent shot. You look very accomplished, so it’s really a question of whether those folks feel like you would make enough of an impact to their programs that they want to promote you to admissions.

If not, you are one of many very qualified applicants applying for not so many spots. If you are full pay, it may help a wee bit. But it’s pretty much of a crap shoot.

If you are determined to attend BS on the east coast, you would be well-served by casting a wider net. That’s not to say you won’t get into the uber rejective schools, but it’s a very real risk.

dw its not

i have emailed the tennis coaches, do you think i would benefit from emailing orchestra or band directors to tell them i am interested

Whether and how to reach out really depends on your skill level and your interests. My kid, for example, knew he’d want to keep taking lessons and planned to audition for orchestra, but wasn’t at a level that he was going to make a difference to the school or admissions. There were kids in the orchestra who had top 10 finishes in national contests, and yes, the music director was keen to have them. For their part, they wanted to understand what opportunities there would be for them on campus to play, if/how they could stay when their “elite” teachers, what requirements there would be to participate in school programs vs more elite youth orchestras, etc.

So in reaching out, you may have questions about the program. If it’s just about participating or taking lessons that may be better asked when you have been accepted. If, however, you feel that the music director, after hearing you, might tell admissions that you would be a huge boon to the process, you should reach out now. The way you have presented it, it looks like you are not in that latter category. Useful, but not exceptional.

You could reach out to your administrator officer and ask if it’d be helpful to submit a portfolio. (Only do this if you are particularly good.)

The admissions officers will be aware of your talents and interests, and the music director will have communicated their needs (oboes, clarinets, etc.) to them, so you don’t need to make that match for them if you just plan to participate.

I’m not extraordinary enough to be top 10 finishes in national contests, but I’m still a high level player for my age and state should I still submit a musical art form, like a video with me playing?

Yes, if you think a video shows that you are very good, submit.
