hi guys. so i really want to apply to phillips academy andover (and andover only) because i thoroughly researched it and went to summer school there – i really enjoyed it!

honestly i wasnt planning to go to american high school, which is why im not applying to other schools. i am planning to go to BASIS Beijing or stay at my current school for HS. however, my parents said that if i can get into andover they would allow me to study there. (applying for financial aid)

STATS

11 A’s, in which 8 are A+’s. No B’s. we don’t do GPAs at my school

competitions:

World Scholar’s Cup China Global Round (1k+ scholars): 9th place overall junior scholar, 6 gold medals in 6 subjects, 8th place individual challenge, gold in debate and writing) World Scholar’s Cup Tournament of Champions Yale(2-3k people): 9th scholar (under 12 years of age)

Debate: (Chinese Nationwide Debate Competition) 2 finalists 1 champion 1 semifinalist+top speaker(I usually get top 1-15 speakers), nationwide debate comp (invitational) champion, many quarterfinalists/partial quarterfinalists/semifinalists/top speakers

China National Academic Pentathlon (basically USAP but Chinese branch), National Round: bronze overall, gold in humanities, bronze in math/science

John Locke Essay Competition (junior category): RESULTS NOT YET ANNOUNCED

Planning on participating in: IOL, overseas debate competitions, etc in 8th grade

Extracurriculars: Art—I go to art class weekly and the teachers there approve of my skills! They’re pushing me to join art competitions and do advanced art

Squash and Badminton: recreational but I’m pretty good at badminton :smiley:

TA-ing/coaching debate team

I haven’t taken SSAT yet (taking it in eighth grade) but i think it is much easier than the tests at my school. I got a 110 on TOEFL without prep.

no essays yet. i honestly just wanna know if these stats are enough to be taken seriously. since im based in china, we dont have honor societies like NJHS here. i also dont go to a famous chinese international school, and i heard that Andover primarily considers students from top schools in China.

forgot to mention: piano for ~6 years? havent attended any competitions/done ABRSM…my teacher suggests i do ABRSM 5 or 7 this year but im really busy

Don’t start a club to get into Boarding School. It comes off inauthentic. Authenticity is the key for Andover.

You have a good application and it’s good that you’ve been there. You can talk about that experience in your essays. Just be aware; Summer School is very different from regular school. Much easier and more fun.

tysmmm and summer school isnt the only reason why i want to go there; many more reasons behind it haha!

Did I read correctly that your parents would only support you for Andover, but no other prestigious schools?

I am not an expert in any way but it seems to me like you have pretty good chances. Your extracurriculars are strong and you are definitely a qualified candidate.

A few notes:

The SSAT: TOEFL is a very different test. Those good scores make it very likely you’ll ace verbal and reading comp. so just make sure you’re studying and prepared for the math section.

Starting things: starting these things sound like great ideas but you may want to narrow all of these down a little bit because Andover is usually looking for strong interest/commitment to activities and you only have so much time in the day.
