Hi, I am currently a junior. Would you please give me my chances?
I am a girl who would like to study either mechanical engineering or biomedical engineering. I was born in Iraq and I moved to the United States when I was 8 years old. I am a pretty much a straight A student--all of my final year grades have been As except for a 92 in Honors Geometry sophomore year. I am not sure how to calculate GPA but I think my weighted GPA would be above a 4.0 and my unweighted would be a 3.9. My GPA out of a 100 is a 96.3 unweighted and a 97.5 weighted.
As for extracurriculars, I do Inkwell (my school's literary and arts magazine), costumes and cast bios for Drama club, Robotics, the Science Bowl, Civil Rights Team, Student Government, French Honor Society, National Honor Society, tutoring, and Science and Technology Club. In addition, I also do Arabic lessons after school. I also do an original science research project every year for my science research class and I participate in my statewide science fair each year. I won first in the Biological Sciences and Engineering category last year as well as an award from the American Psychological Association my freshman year. I have also gotten a gold key for the scholastic writing awards.
For leadership positions, next year I will be head of robotics and head of research for my science research class. I am editor-and-chief of Inkwell, co-captain of the civil rights team, head editor/writer for cast bios in Drama club, and co-head of the academics committee for student government. I will also probably run for a leadership position for the national honors society. Also co-captain for science bowl team.
I have not taken the SAT yet, but based on practice tests and my PSAT score, I am within the range for Brown. I plan on taking the SAT subject test for Biology and Math II. I'm top 10% for my class, definitely top 10 as well.
Over the course of my high school career, I will have taken 9 honors classes, 1 IB HL class, and 7 AP classes. My course load has been pretty rigorous with the exception of my freshman year (only took 2 honors classes).
So what do you think? haha. I can right a pretty rockin' essay so I'm banking on that (and my past, to an extent, being an immigrant and all). :).
I meant my SAT is within the range for Smith not Brown whoops. Also I can “write”*.

@thesafasaleh I’m a current first-year studying physics! I think your stats look great so far…for UChicago the essays are one of the most important components, so make sure those are stellar and you let your personality shine through (though looking from your post you should have no problem with this!). Just keep doing what you’re currently doing and I think you’d have a good shot at UChicago.

@b1ggreenca Yeah, I’m not just going to apply to Dartmouth, but thanks for the helpful reply! And yes, Brown, Dartmouth, Johns Hopkins, UChicago, and Smith. Because I’d like to get opinions from multiple people and posting it on multiple threads increases my chances of getting a response. No need to be a jerk about it :).
I think you are definitely a throng candidate. Everything looks great. But I also think that how you portray yourself in the application is very important. You should show that science is something innately love in your essays and really figure out how to show your strengths at their best. Good luck on everything!
How do you want people to chance you when you give confusing details for your gpa saying that is is “3.9” when later you say it is 96.3/100 unweighted which is a “3.5” by my calculations also how is your weighted over 4.0 when you subsequently say that your weighted gpa is 97.5/100? Also, PSATs are not good indicators for actual test scores. Finally, you are missing some information such as school size/location/income which all play a large part in evaluating your extracurriculars. Please look at some of the other chance me posts and reformat accordingly. However, given what you say you have and by my assumptions that you go to a medium size suburban school your chances are slightly above average unless you are a refugee in which case I would say it is rather favorable.
@poipr123 The 4.0 GPA scale is different from the scale that my high school uses, which is out of a 100. It is an average of all of the final grades. They don’t give us our GPA in the 4.0 format. By my understanding, the GPA on that scale is calculated by taking all of the final grades and converting them to a number on that scale and then multiplying it by the credits recieved from that class , adding those numbers up and dividing them by the number of classes. As I said, all of my final grades in my classes are A’s, so they count as 4.0, but I have one B, so it is impossible for me to have a 4.0 GPA unweighted, my guess would be that my GPA is somewhere around a 3.9 since I have taken a ton of classes and gotten A’s in all but one. With all of my AP and honors classes that I have gotten A’s in, they would count for higher than a 4.0 when calculating the weighted GPA. The GPA on a 100 scale is different from that on a 4.0 scale. If you get 93’s in every class, then your average would be a 93 out of a 100, but you would still have a 4.0 GPA. If you got all 100’s except for one 92, your average would be higher but you would not have a 4.0 GPA. I don’t know if I am calculating my GPA correctly since my school doesn’t do it on the 4.0 scale, but it is definitely not a 3.5…
As for school, I go to school in a small town in Maine, in a pretty well-off neighborhood. My school has about 700 students. For income, I am assuming you mean my family's income, which I thought didn't play a role in admissions but whatever. Both of my parents used to be dentists but they are not licensed in the US; however, my dad now works in public health management after obtaining so more education. My mom doesn't work but my dad makes about 80,000 a year. I have 3 brothers who will all eventually go to college.
@thesafasaleh it’s really hard to give any kind of judgement without test scores at this point in time. Try and relax about college until next semester.
I think you have a pretty good chance! You seem pretty involved in science related activities and you have a good essay topic. Also your grades seem great! Good luck!
