Chance me for Chem Egineering. (UIUC, Purdue, GAtech, UW Madison, UM Twin Cities)

Hi guys! I am a senior for Illinois that goes to a large public School in Chicago called Lane Tech. I am applying for chemical engineering (maybe with and emphasis in Petroleum or Nano-particles) and was wondering if you can chance me. I was already accepted to Iowa State, Penn State, Kettering University. I was deferred from UChicago, Case Western, and Rose Hulman, and I was denied from Vanderbilt ED.

G.P.A. Weighted: 5.000, Unweighted: 3.803

ACT(1): Comp: 26 Eng: 24 Math: 32 Reading: 22 Science: 25 Writing: 9 Eng w/ Writing: 24
ACT(2): Comp: 27 Eng: 31 Math: 28 Reading: 25 Science: 23 Writing: 8 Eng w/ Writing: 29

AP Classes:
Sophomore Year: APUSH and APES
Junior Year: AP Micro Econ, AP Art History, AP Chem, AP Eng
Senior Year: AP 3D Art, AP Physics 1&2, AP Clac AB, AP Lit, AP Pysch

Extracurricular Activities
I am a currently a Lane Scholar and enrolled in the Lane Tech Alpha STEM Program.
I am was also awarded the AP scholar award by College Board.
I am a member of Lane Tech High School’s:

  1. Economics Club: Founder and President (senior year)
  2. National Honors Society (junior and senior year)
  3. Alpha College Planning Committee: Secretary (junior and senior year)
  4. Chemistry Club (sophomore, junior, and senior year)
  5. Alpha Mentors (junior year)
  6. Cross Country Team (freshmen and sophomore year)
  7. Psychology Club (sophomore year)
  8. Filipino Club (sophomore year)
  9. Hellenic (Greek) Club (sophomore year)
  10. Key Club/ Community Service (freshmen year)
I am also a participant in the University of Chicago’s Young Scholars Program taking advanced math classes on Saturdays.
Placed second in the Lane Tech’s High School Science Fair, advanced to regionals, and
competed in the Chicago City Science Fair receiving the Bartley Family award and a grant of $50 in March 2013. My science project was “Effects of Nanoparticles in Sunscreen on the Growth of S. Epidermidis, under UV Rays.” In freshmen year I got top 20 in the school’s freshmen Science Fair.
Participated in Northwestern University’s Saturday Enrichment Programs:
    Computer Programming & Gaming
    Debate and Persuasion (sessions 1 & 2)
    Exceptional Essays
    Honors Biology
    Honors Chemistry
    Honors Physics
    Intro to Engineering
    Problem Solving (Math)
    Robotics
    In addition to these activities:
Over the summer of 2013, I have taken an Astronomy class at Wright College achieving an A in the class and am eligible to receive college credit for this class at certain colleges.
I volunteered at the Chicago Public Library (Edgebrook Facility) and at the YMCA in assisting the disabled swim. I currently have 139 service hours.
During the summers of 2011, 2012, 2013, and 2014 I worked as an assistant to my father who works as a carpenter.
I also taught myself how to play the guitar over the summer of 2013 and have been playing for about 1 year.
I took a Macroeconomics class at the University of Chicago where I received a grade of a B+ over the summer of 2014.

I know my ACT is low but I hoping everything else I have done gets me into a good engineering program. I am happy that I got into Penn State, but I want to see if I get into any better engineering programs.

Got deferred from Purdue for Chem E. :frowning:
Now my parents want me to go to Iowa State because I will only have to pay 20,000 a year.
I’m am so confused cuz my friend have worst stats than me and she got in to Purdue.

What were your AP scores for the tests so far?
I

Good match for GA Tech, they don’t take Reading or Science ACT scores and your superscore for math and writing looks great!

i got mostly 3 on my ap tests and a couple of 2s

thanks marzipan. I think I am definitely going to apply now.

Look at the common data sets, I think GA tech is a really competitive school for something like chem eng. Even across the whole of GA tech the low end ACT score for last year was a 28 comp. Is 2 or 3 a pass in AP? I would disagree with marzipan and call GA tech no match. When did you apply to Umin? Lots of acceptances have already gone out from there.

Ik I applied awhile to uminn but because I applied for Chem E and my ACT is not good OI think they are waiting to give me a decision

3 is pass and 2 is not on the AP but colleges dont see that unless they request for it. GT doesnt

You seem to have plenty of deferred reaches, and you have your safeties already. Why add another application?

You are right and Penn state and Iowa state are good safety schools for engineering. I feel if I go to Iowa state there will be a better possibility of me standing out and being closer to the top of my class rather than going to Purdue, gt, or Illinois and struggling.

@‌pep2019

I was just curious.
You mentioned on 12/15/2014 that you were accepted to engineering at Purdue.
However, on 12/23/2014, you said that you got deferred from Purdue.
Did Purdue revert its decision?

12-23-2014
“Got deferred from Purdue for Chem E.”

12-15-2014
“Unfortunately I got deferred to Rose but was accepted to engineering to Purdue, but congrats!!!”

Yeah they reverted it because my school sent in the wrong transcript and they found that out when i called to see if they would give me any scholarships they realized the wrong transcript was in there data so they said if my grades are similar, and they are actually better than the transcript my school sent, then they will accept in the next round of decisions into chem e.

update: got into Purdue engineering and Wisconsin.

Did you get into Wisconsin for Chem E? if so, then definitely go there (unless money is an issue).
Purdue is also very good, but I’d say that for chem E it is in this order:

  1. Minnesota
  2. Wisconsin
  3. UIUC
  4. GA tech I base these off a couple of website such as this: http://www.accesseducationindia.com/top-chemical-engineering-courses-usa.html and http://grad-schools.usnews.rankingsandreviews.com/best-graduate-schools/top-engineering-schools/chemical-engineering-rankings

Minnesota should get back to you soon, what about UIUC? that is an excellent school for engineering. I think results were released recently.

I got into minn, wis, and uiuc all for engineering. I ended up not applying to gatech. Still waited for biomolecular at uchicago and a few other schools that i stopped considering like northeastern, rensselaer, rit, and a few others.

@kevinlee2016
I am right now slip between uiuc and Wisconsin because uiuc is cheaper but UW has a better Chem E, a better campus and will let me double in Chem E and economics in four years while UIUC will probably take 5 years.
What is your opinion?

Oh and I visited minn and didn’t really like the campus as but as uw even though it is cheaper than uw its not cheaper than instate uiuc, it is also too cold for me.

@ Pep Does Illinois have a regional reciprocity agreement with other midwest state schools? I ask because my nephew pays instate tuition at Wisconsin, but lives in MN.

Minnesota for chem E?? Honestly, with those scores I would be ecstatic to get into such a great school for chem E. I’d say give Minnesota another shot. It would be a truly wise decision, they are currently ranked 3rd. Check to see how much money they are giving you. Wisconsin is still better than Uiuc but how much of a difference money wise are we talking here? If it’s like a 5,000- 10,000 dollar difference then Wisconsin is worth it, trust me.
