chance me for Columbia Engineering ED !

Hello! Thanks for reading. I’m a junior just about done with school.

I go to one of the best high schools in the nation, so I’d say my school is very competitive and almost everyone here has sat scores of 2200+ ; we are held to different standards…

Race: Asian
Sex: Female
State: Texas
Major: Chemical Engineering
GPA: My school’s classes are incredibly rigorous and very much over normal AP level. I took many difficult classes, but as a result didn’t do so well junior year. At the end of junior year, my GPA is 4.39. Expected to go up by senior year midyear
Standardized testing: 2330 on SAT / 35 on ACT + writing / 800 on Physics SAT 2, 800 on Math 2 SAT 2

APs: 13 total at graduation. Environmental Science (4) / Macroeconomics (?) / Microeconomics (?) / Chem (5) / Bio (5) / Physics E (?) / Physics M (?) / Psychology (?) / BC Calc (?) / US History (4) / Lang (snr year) / Lit (snr year) / Studio Art (snr year)

ECs:

  • captain of debate, and i’ve broken (that’s gone to elimination rounds) at a few national tournaments.
  • art ; i’ve sold my artwork and have won a few local and state competitions
  • director of a volunteering program to teach kids science
  • coordinator for inspiring femgineers, which helps girls get into STEM
  • editor of the newspaper (not editor in chief) for two years
  • used to be part of latin honor society, got bronze in the national latin exam freshman year
  • various sporadic volunteering at a local hospital and tutoring place throughout the years
  • member of chemistry society and national art honor society (not that important)
  • I won some awards for writing

Work:

  • I worked with classmates to create a professional research paper regarding ecology
  • I’m interning (unpaid) at a research lab
  • I worked as an web artist for a local company’s website

Recs/Writing:
I’m pretty good at writing so hopefully the essays will turn out well. I’m getting supplement rec from my coach and also doing an art portfolio

Anything to point out? What should I do senior year? Thank ya

You probably have an average chance.

Are you applying to UT? UT is a better school for engineering. You may want to consider Purdue, Michigan, Georgia Tech, VA Tech

Thanks. I want to get out of the south (skin issues, a bit), I’m considering Mich and VA Tech.

While it is a reach, you have a shot, especially for ED, assuming your UW GPA is at least a 3.9. From my experience, Columbia loves aspiring engineers who are involved in non-engineering things as well. Btw what kind of debate do you do?

Also, despite what the above poster said, Columbia will likely give you a significantly better education and more opportunities in engineering than UT, Purdue, etc. despite them having “higher” department rankings.

Isn’t U of Delaware one of the best CE schools? University of Wisconsin I know is and Madison is a great city.

Thanks for the input puzzled, I do policy (the only debate that’s got a college circuit, btw).

@ bates: That may be true for CE schools, though I’ve really got my heart set on Columbia ever since I visited. And the ivy league education is a plus .

If want a career in engineering, then you go to the school with the best program. That is where the recruiting is done. Engineers are impressed by the curriculum not the name.

Ivy League schools are not a plus in all cases.

If your goal is to become a chemical engineer and work at the top firms in your field, Columbia is not the place.

You have a chance at Columbia. You should prob compare stats to others at school and get a better feel based on course rigor vs population. Either way, you may get in, though there are never guarantees. I feel that you’ll probably get in, but no one can really tell.

what is your unweighted GPA?
