Chance me for CS at top UK schools

@PurpleTitan @Twoin18 @collegemom3717 Thanks a lot. U have given me lots of food for thought. I am so glad that I asked for advice.
Rutgers itself is an option then. His research mentor works @ Rutgers. He will probably get a full ride as well being instate.

Sorry for the late reply. @sr55662 , your DS certainly seems to have the background to be a successful applicant.

His score on the past MAT bodes well as that is perhaps the single most important factor in being invited for interview.

How does he like logic problems? For my son’s first CS interview, he was given a set of logic problems the night before, had to solve them and then review solutions. Surprisingly, each year there seem to be a number of very high MAT scorers who crash out at interview. Might want to spend some time with a mock, perhaps with his research partner.

Would certainly look to that person for his UCAS LoR. My son did have his LoR written by one of his math teachers who was not only an Oxford grad but who had been a teacher for a number of years in London at one of the largest Oxbridge feeder schools which allowed her to provide useful context.

Best of luck if he decides to go down that road.

@HazeGrey Thank you very much. Mock interview seems like a great idea.
My son is quite good at logic puzzles. He is USA Computing Olympiad Platinum Level participant (top 100 at high school level).

just wanted to give an update.
DS has achieved all predicted grades has 5 in 8 AP.
800 in MATH II, BIO and CHEM
Missed USAMO cutoff by 2 marks got 8 in AIME.
Thank you all for the wounder full advice. After lot of deliberation he has decided to pursue CS at UK schools (Edinburgh, Oxford, Imperial, UCL, KCL) and follow up with masters in comp bio.
for US schools he is focusing on comp bio primarily. Will keep you updated as the process unfolds.

Congratulations and good luck!

Good luck! Feel free to reach out if you have any CS specific questions that you need help with. You should also check out the UK version of CC - The Student Room. There is an Oxford CS professor who is relatively active answering questions. Should also focus on finding a location for taking the MAT. We live close to NYC so it wasn’t an issue for my son, but you may need to work a little harder at it depending on where you are.

Thank you very much.

@HazeGrey We are also in NJ. I think NYC will be his best option for MAT. I think we would definitely need your advice on choosing the college@Oxford ( I have already gone through some of your previous posts on CS colleges and thanks to you I have a fair idea now)

Update: DS has received interview invites from Oxford (Balliol) and Imperial. Unconditional from KCL.

Congrats, @sr55662 ! That’s exciting news for your son. Let us know what he thinks of the interviews & how it all comes out

@sr55662 Good luck to your son next week. I believe that there are sample questions on the CS Dept web site. My son said that in his second interview they actually asked him one of them! CS format for my son three years ago was that he received a problem sheet the night before that they had to complete and then review in the interview. Not sure if that’s still the case, but something to potentially be prepared for.

Thanks @collegemom3717 @HazeGrey. Yes he has gone through the CS Dept web site. My son feels he is decently prepared for the interview as he routinely solves Algorithmic problems. He is actually very excited to have a chance to talk to such accomplished academics and looking forward to making the most of his time at Oxford.

Good luck in the interviews!

So, how did it go? Is he in love?

Yes he really enjoyed his stay at Oxford and thinks that interviews went well. But he will not be able to attend Oxford as he has been accepted by UChicago (ED) to study computational Neuroscience.

“But he will not be able to attend Oxford as he has been accepted by UChicago (ED)…”

Though Oxford wouldn’t give two hoots about an ED commitment if they make him an offer and he actually wants to attend…

Agreed But his High school will be very unhappy about not honoring the ED commitment. There is also small matter of actually getting an offer  . My son was very impressed by the quality of other applicants he met at Oxford.

But the ED commitment strictly refers to US schools, right? I wouldn’t withdraw the Oxford application just yet, if he’d really like to go. I understand that the US school would like to lock in the student completely, and the guidance councillor may be wary about being blacklisted, but acceptance by an international school is a risk the US school must accept under the ED agreement, just as you are allowed to accept a place at a US school as a safety by May 1st while you wait for the conditional offer of an international university to come through. ED cannot be more binding than an actual acceptance.

Did he get an Oxford offer this week?

@Tigerle: “ED cannot be more binding than an actual acceptance”

??? The U of C already accepted him.

Anyway, I can certainly see someone choosing the U of C over Oxford if costs aren’t a concern.

Good relations with the alma mater HS could certainly be important too. I have degrees from an Ivy-equivalent and M7 b-school and my HS network probably has been second-most helpful in terms of landing jobs (the types that M7 MBAs aim for).

ED is binding worldwide. When you get an offer from somewhere you applied ED to, you should withdraw from everywhere you applied to worldwide and commit (if you can afford it, that is).
