honest question, why are you applying to chicago?

i just wanted to see if i even had a chance at it

wrong answer.

you need to have a reason to want to go to chicago

well yea…it’s a very good college in a very nice location.
and its econ major is one of the best
i’d want to at least try to get in

^No offense, but you seriously need to explore their website in greater detail or at least visit campus and do their info session thing. Otherwise, you’ll have great luck in writing their essay as to why you want to go there.

going to a top college is a poor reason to apply to the university of chicago.

Well I’m asking you guys for opinions on whether my stats have a shot at Chicago. No use writing an essay if I don’t have a chance.

elasticity didn’t post this thread to be interrogated on why he is applying to u chicago. you have a good chance, but be sure to show passion in your essays.

You have pretty solid chances.

Elasticity, I do not think UChicago is right for you. You should, by now, know that students at UChicago are undeclared in their first and second years. You certainly have not done enough research about the University. I doubt you will be accepted. Come back next year and tell me whether I am right.

Divine Comedy is either joking or insensitive. He has no reason to believe you are wrong for Chicago.

" Well I’m asking you guys for opinions on whether my stats have a shot at Chicago. No use writing an essay if I don’t have a chance. "

Sorry but I have to agree with some of the other people. There is no use writing an essay when you don’t have true interest in a schol. If you don’t have a definite reason why you want to go to U of C then your essays aren’t going to be good. Note that U of C’s essays are not like other colleges. Their questions are as simple as “What U of C” no they are much more complex. Also note that the people that are telling you to research further are honest. Although you have a chance with your scores, you don’t seem to really be interested. The answer “well yea…it’s a very good college in a very nice location.” doesn’t really cut it because it makes you seem like you are applying more for “bragging rights” than having a real interest in the school. It’s like saying I want to go to med school so I can make money. That defeats the purpose of doctors, they care more about their patients than money. I seriously recommend you to read more about the school and see if it is really a fit.

^cdz512:

Unfortunately, many people I know these days heading to med school want to go there because they think of the $ more so than the people, which undermines the basis of medicine.

^Elasticity:

We (including I) were blasting you with the “why are you applying to Chicago,” because the first thing is that Chicago is not the most numbers-based school ever … they sincerely care about the words you put in your essays more so than your numbers. The admission office has a strange theory that you can demonstrate your creative intellect with your words … hence the match for you and the university. Are your stats competitive? Yes … they (33/3.82) are in line with what they’re looking for. It’s enough to say that you have what it takes to potentially succeed there, but you’ll also need the ability to and appreciation for thinking outside the box. There’s more to stats when it comes to getting into Chicago. Chicago is not meant for everyone, and there are people with very high stats who get rejected (2300s+, 3.9s).

I urge you to research and understand this school better … there’s much much more to it than it having the #1 econ dept in the USA. If you think that, you’re totally missing out the essence of the U of C.

ab2013,

“Unfortunately, many people I know these days heading to med school want to go there because they think of the $ more so than the people, which undermines the basis of medicine.”

Yeah I do have to agree, it’s quite sad, I just hope that people will change.

^^of course people heading to med school care more about the money, if they didn’t, they would have gone to grad school –> research. heh.

ab2013, what do you think is the essence then?
