Chance Me for Georgia Tech vs UVA. International, SAT 1430, 98.94 GPA, rank 1/16

First of all, I live in an underdeveloped South American country and not a U.S citizen. In the august 2024 sat, I got 1430. English 710, math 720. TOEFL:110
I prefer georgia tech over university of virginia, but I want to apply to the one that I have more chance of getting accepted since the app fee is too expensive. So I would like to know if I will have a good chance at georgia tech or university of virginia. + I am passionate about solving plastic pollution and I want to study chemistry to help the environment.

I think my extracurriculars are pretty solid:

my stats:
GPA:98.94(first in class, but my class size is 16 because my school is very small)
—recycling club: 3 years, president, founder, * From 10th grade to 12th grade, our club installed recycling bins to gather plastics.

  • Special Friday activity: educated kinder 1,2,3, on environmental problems associated with plastics, and performed a workshop to create a piggy bank with recycled plastic bottles.
  • Donated 100 reusable bowls to the cafeteria to stop the use of disposable plastic products for desserts.

Debate Club: 3 years, secretary,

  • won three first places in tournaments organized by other schools.

Research Internship at a university, 11th grade summer, * Gained hands-on experience in chemical engineering through a month-long internship.

  • learning about various research equipment
  • exploring smart window technology, including its components and experimental outcomes
  • conducting experiments to extract and analyze epicuticular wax, the protective wax layer on the surface of a leaf, developing ways to use epicuticular wax as an alternative to plastic coating on paper.

And I have also volunteered a lot in my church, about 43 hours per year for each of the activities.

  • teaching korean to 8 local youths, 9 months
  • instructor for young children at church msission cite, 1year
  • music intructor, 2years ( taught 12 students intotal how to read music scores and how to play melodica)
  • Finalist in Genius olympiad ( with the individual research i did in the internship sepearte from the lab)
  • 8th places in national math competiton
  • several outstanding achievements from school for every subject.

With the resources I got in my surroundings, I think I maximized my potential and did everything I could. And I also think that I have a very strong recommendation letter and college essay. What do you think my chances are at both university??? I am thinking since I am an international student, I would have worse chance at georgia tech than the uni of virginia. but then I am not sure if majoring in chemistry at UVA will be good. :sob: :sob: :sob:. please help mee thank you.

I’m sorry, but if the app fees are too expensive, there is no point in you applying to either Georgia Tech or University of Virginia. Georgia Tech and University are public universities, and do not provide financial aid to international students.

Cost of attendance per year for GTech for international students is $55,372
Cost of attendance per year for University of Virginia for international students is close to $80,000.

If an extra $120 is a financial hardship for you, there is no way that you or your parents will be able to afford the hundreds of thousands of dollars that these colleges will cost you.

So there is absolutely no way that you will be able to afford either place, even if you are accepted.

I read on another thread that you are applying to University of California campuses. You won’t be able to afford them either.

Seriously, you need to check what the costs of these colleges are before you apply.

My first reaction is the same as @MWolf. If you cannot afford to pay two application fees, then I am wondering how you are going to afford to attend university in the US.

What can you afford to pay to study in the US for four years?

You can also email each school you want to apply to and ask for application fee waivers. Application fees shouldn’t be a barrier to applying!

You may also want to look at private schools that could possibly cover more of your education with financial aid grants than a public university can.
