Chance me for Ivys, BS/MD Programs, NYU, and Swarthmore

Congrats on what you’ve done. I think the non profit and. Stanford research are great if they can be quantified and validated. I don’t agree all non profits are meaningless. If you legitimately are doing things, helping, can quantify and validate, then great. If it’s fluff, it’s likely to be found out. I think many are fluff.

You need to calculate your unweighted gpa. It’s easy to do. Give yourself a 4 for each A, 3 for B, 2 for C etc. Add up and divide by the # of classes. In other words, 2 As and 2 Bs = 3.5. Weighted GPAs are hard to use bcuz a 4.1 may mean different things at every school.

Don’t use PE.

Only getting to Spanish 3 if your school goes higher could hurt. Could-doesn’t mean it will.

I agree, unless you can afford $60k, don’t apply to Penn State.

How low income is your mom. If you get in nowhere what can you actually afford ?

I took Spanish freshman and sophomore year. My counselor would not allow me to take Spanish 3 Honors my junior year due to there only being one class that conflicted with Pre-Calculus.So there’s a reason that I’ll only go up to Spanish 3 next year when my school goes up to 4. Could be written in additional info section

My mom makes $40k a year, I just want to apply to Penn State’s BS/MD program. If I get into only the undergrad, I’d obviously just attend Rutgers instead assuming I don’t get into any of my Ivy’s, NYU, or Swat

Yes it can and better if your counselor validates on their report

How would you pay? Is it free - Penn State ?

Is your mom also low asset ? Sone are low income but high asset - own a home etc. That can hurt aid.

If you’re super high on med school, Ramapo is public and auto admit for the DO program should you meet qualifications.

Also I don’t see it but I read that Drew may be free tuition for low income in state. Maybe someone else knows. It can give you the LAC you desire if so.

How would you pay for Penn State BS/MD?

Besides Questbridge (which is not definite) I would focus on schools that meet full need as well as schools that give significant merit (ie Alabama). Is Rutgers affordable?

Rutgers is very affordable with the Scarlet Guarantee. I would be immensely grateful to get into the esteemed Penn State BS/MD, we should first discuss my odds if anything as they only accept less than 5% of applicants.

I am glad Rutgers would be affordable.

Your odds for Penn State BS/MD are low. How would you pay for this if you did get in? This is what I do not understand.

I would not be able to attend without taking significant loans

My uncle owns my place and my mom is a tenant.

Penn State BS/MD requires 3 years of undergrad followed by 4 years of medical school.

The loans you are permitted to take will not cover the cost of those 3 years. I do not recommend your parent taking loans to help.

I may have to work a job done as well… We’re all operating under an assumption I get into this sub-5% prestigious program. If I do manage to get in, I would be willing to do lots of things in order to make it work.

From what I read the Scarlett Guaranty is available for only 4 semesters.

How much in loans do you think you can take? Federal student loans are limited and I would imagine your parent’s ability to take out loans will also be limited given the low income level, no home ownership.

IMO your primary focus should be to find affordable college options.

Scarlett Guarantee is available for two years, Rutgers tuition is $14,933 for in-state commuters. I’d owe Rutgers about $29k for the other two years of Undergrad. I think this can be manageable if I save enough money up. I do like the NYU Promise, however, as it covers all four years!

Penn State is currently about $60,000 a year. You are permitted to take out about $5500 your first year, and a little more each additional year.

Then you need to pay for medical school.

I would take this school off of your list- focus on schools that meet full need and schools that might provide enough merit.

I would just like to see if I can get into their BS MD program, thats all

I think you had an extensive feed last year…

If unaffordable, an acceptance doesn’t matter. Funds will not appear because you got into a program you like.

ETA From what I see the Penn State BS/MD program has GPA and MCAT thresholds to meet before going on for the MD.

Thank you, everyone. I’ll remove it off my list. It’s very frustrating as I don’t understand how PSU expects people to pay for their tuition.

An example of a school to look at would be the University of Richmond. They have competitive, full ride scholarships. This school also meets full need.

Look at schools that meet full need (ie Colgate, etc).

Schools such as Alabama have significant merit awards.
