Chance me for Michigan Early Action, others- Engineering [NY resident, 98 or 4.0 GPA, 1490 (700R/790M) SAT]

Just bombed out at Duke- Early Decision. Hoping for Michigan or other schools which will be better fit for Aerospace (Got into Ohio St. so far, applied to Boulder, Syracuse, Georgia Tech among others)

Michigan

  • Safety : Ohio St, UB, RPI
  • Likely : RPI
  • Match: Syracuse, Boulder,
  • Reach: Duke, Mich? Northwestern, G Tech,

You didn’t bomb out - you gave it your shot for the school you thought was great.

And for a job with an aero company, I don’t think it much matters the school. In fact, at the company next to my sons, he met kids from Columbia and they work with kids from all school - as does my son - from Akron to Michigan.

And since cost isn’t a factor but you’ll seek aid - if you’re full pay - be glad Duke turned you down.

Ohio State is a great school, likely will have merit and potentially will land you the same level position as any school on the list.

RPI, CU, UB, and Syracuse should happen

Michigan and NEU will be tough as will Georgia Tech and Northwestern. The three (not Ga Tech) will also be outrageously expensive assuming you don’t qualify for aid (which won’t happen at Michigan).

Bang for the buck - Ohio State will be a great get!! Frankly, better than Michigan.

In hindsight, my son turning down Purdue to attend Alabama likely had zero impact on his earnings as he works with kids (at the same salary) at an aero company with Michigan, Purdue, Washington, Case Western, NC State but also Akron, Utah, W Michigan. And I saved, even after Purdue merit, $80K. I didn’t think it was a wise decision but turns out he was right.

So you got a great get, you’ll save your family the financial heartache that Duke was likely to cause, and all will be fine!!! Michigan and the two NUs will likely cause similar price shock (if not aid qualified).

If money does come into play, UB will be a great get too. You could do great from there!!!

Congrats and best of luck on the remaining. Engineering is a brutal major - and those who can get through and have the realization to look for jobs, not just study, will do great - from most anywhere I believe.

Ty So much for your kind post and time it took to write. Do you have thoughts about my odds for Michigan or the other schools based on my statistics regardless of cost? (which is def a factor for sure)

You have a nice list. You should get into Syracuse and some others. Syracuse might give you some good merit aid. Just curious why you don’t have SUNY Buffalo?

Based on other kids I know who applied to your reaches for engineering (and got rejected)… you should prepare yourself for not getting into any of the reaches. Not because you wouldn’t be great, but because there are just so many other strong students applying. But you might! No one here can chance you for those schools because they’re reaches for everyone no matter how strong the application.

Are you excited about attending any of the non-reaches or are you looking for additional suggestions?

I don’t see you getting into your reaches - but you’re a fine student and you never know.

Part of me likes to prepare for the worst. But that would be my guess - but only the remaining schools can answer you. My guess doesn’t matter as I’m not them.

And frankly, OSU at what it will cost is a better bet (IMHO) than Michigan.

Best of luck.

SOrry , UB is on the list they have asked me to apply honors which I will. That should be a nice option. Ty for your time.

UB might actually be your best option (if money comes into play).

Great school. There’s a parent on there whose kid chose it from California, had a wonderful experience and wonderful job.

It’s engineering - you need ABET. You don’t need aero although it’s fine to have. MechE will work as well for aero and give you more options.

Jobs are (today) plentiful and most large companies pay by job/location and not school attended.

If you get into a reach but your parents are concerned financially, don’t worry - you won’t miss a beat.

Good luck.

Oh great – thought you meant Boulder. As long as you like Buffalo, you’ll be just fine! They do have an aero major, but as stated above, you can major in MechE (or EE, or CE, etc.) and have an aero career just fine. Syracuse has been giving really nice merit aid packages to some engineering students, so they may also come in at a decent price. I honestly think it would be hard to pass up Buffalo for any other school, even if you did get into Mi$$$higan or Northwe$$$tern.

Good luck, you’ll have some nice choices I think.

TY very much. I guess I was hoping to leave upstate NY! especially in winter.

And you chose Ann Arbor and Chicago ?

Okay, I totally understand. But Chicago and Ann Arbor (and all your others) aren’t gonna be that different  Here’s hoping for G Tech?

If you want warm, aero, cheap, you should absolutely throw in a quick app U Alabama Huntsville. Like, seriously, do it today. It is a total gem.

Great suggestion - it’s surrounded by Aero companies - in NASAs second city!!

And for you (OP), dirt cheap!! Nearly 90% of tuition would be covered.

Fine school, great rep.

And one article I read noted Huntsville as the top city for young people to start their lives.

UAH - Admission & Aid - Freshman Out-of-State Academic Scholarships

Ty very much! will look into it.

Few seem to mention that Huntsville metro has two state universities. The other one, AAMU, also has mechanical engineering and even better scholarships.

The reason that there are two is the legacy of segregation. AAMU is the HBCU, while UAH is the HWCU. Even to this day, their enrollments are highly racially skewed relative to the state population.
